You have Android and iOS on two sides of the spectrum.
With iOS, it's one manufacturer that makes the software and hardware, extremely closed-source. No variation, no choice whatsoever, just the iPhone. And it's a good platform, just, not a lot of options.
Then with Android, you have every manufacturer doing their own thing, with Google making the software and not keeping any manufacturers to task (unless they make one of the "pure Google" phones). Extremely fragmented, wonky update schedules, etc.
With Microsoft, you have the software maker keeping the hardware makers to task, while giving them options for customization. When Windows 7.5 was released, I believe that every phone that ran Windows 7 had it available within a month. ICS has been out for months, and it's still on only a handful of phones.
