This is rough. I don't know if they can afford to alienate such a huge part of their userbase as young as the platform is.

It's not a huge part, and no one is alienated. Microsoft has done an excellent job of offering 7.5 for older phones. If someone - for some reason - hasn't upgraded yet, they are free to do so.

A huge part of their userbase? I doubt that there are all that many WP7 users who have not upgraded to 7.5. Every single Windows Phone can be upgraded to 7.5, and there is no excuse for not upgrading.

And at any rate, Microsoft is still nowhere...
