Verizon Wireless and European carrier Vodafone today announced plans to introduce transatlantic text messaging. Customers will be able to exchange text messages between the Verizon Wireless network and Vodafone's European networks. The service is available immediately for the UK, and will be expanded in early 2004 to include Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden. The link and message conversion is provided by U.S. vendor InphoMatch. Vodafone holds a 45% stake in Verizon Wireless.

Linking SMS across teh Atlantic?

I'm not sure why this is considered news, I have been doing this via T-Mobile since early 2002.

Last year while traveling in Ireland and the UK, I kept in contact with my wife via SMS the entire trip, I wasn't even charged in the European fashion (per message) since my contract already has 1000 SMS messages a month (two blocks of 500 messages).

I often send SMS to others who use different providers (AT&T, SprintPCS, and Cingular, though never to Verizon), and they always have gone through....
Yeah, no big deal. I can SMS my friends in the UK with T-Mobile from the US and also text message them when I'm in the UK and roaming on Vodafone and BT Cellnet.

Also text back from the UK to T-Mobile US and Verizon Wireless customers.
