Google made a new beta version of its Mobile Maps application available for BlackBerries, Nokia S60 3rd Edition and Windows Mobile smartphones today. The biggest difference between the new and old versions is that the new version uses cell tower information to generate the user's location. This has several advantages over GPS in that it uses less battery power, has very fast location times and works indoors to an extent. It is less accurate than GPS, however. Google claims 500 meter to 5000 meter accuracy. Areas with more dense cell tower coverage will provide more accurate results. Google Maps with My Location will work with GPS-equipped devices, as well. The new version of the software can be downloaded for free.
