Works on the N75
And it's surprizingly accurate. Here's another thing: they reprogrammed the zoom buttons, which are now 1 and 3, to place the search on the right softkey. It's obvious that they redesigned it to make the search (for services, restaurants, etc) more accessable and therefore more often used.
It's as if Google makes money from from advertising or something...
just wondering, where do you live? Because I live in the L.A. area, but my N75 is currently saying, "My Location is Temporarily Unavailable."
BB Pearl works fine
I just downloaded as well, and it works fine on my ATT BB Pearl. I'm getting location info at 1700 meter resolution which is better than nada. 😉
I'm not sure how Google is implementing it software wise, but the large location ring could be due to the GSM network. In a GSM network, your phone "talks" to only one tower at a time. Therefore, you're limited to location generated off the cell sector and some basic time calcs for xmission.
In a CDMA network, your handset talks to several towers at a time, therefore giving a better chance at true triangulation.
That's IF Google is using this info to generate the location information.
I'd like to hear what experiences other users have had on GSM (ATT, TMobile) and C...

it was working for mine last night too. i was having too much fun with it
I'm getting virtually the same thing you are. I use an unlocked Nokia N95 on T-Mobile, in Austin, TX.
That sounds correct to me.
I'm also getting 1700 meter resolution on my Tilt (with GPS turned off), and the center of the circle always seems to be in the same place. I'm guessing that's the physical location of the cell tower that I'm talking to,...

It's pretty darn close to my exact location here in the Phoenix suburbs. I am using a VZW BBerry 8830.
No-go on Treo 700wx (Sprint)
LBS says "Not available" on my Sprint Treo 700wx. Figures. I use my Houx GPS receiver which works perfect with Google Maps and IGuidance.
There is a list of phones the new locater feature will not work with. They include the iPhone, the Treo 700w, the original Motorola Q and the original Samsung Blackjack.
dosent work with the Mogul/6800 either. I wonder why not.
Pretty sweet
I just downloaded it onto my N95 and played around with it. So far I really like it. It's something that I can use when I don't need to know precisely where I am, don't have a clear view of the sky (ie when I'm indoors) and saves my battery. And if I need anything more specific, I can just turn on my GPS and use Google Maps with it. Kudos to Google for this.
Yeah... I'm hoping it gets more accurate as they continue to work on it, because right now it's pretty bad on my Tilt. I'm in downtown Seattle and all it can offer me is a 1700 meter radius... which is pretty much all of downtown Seattle.
They cla...

Works great with my BBerry 8830 with VZW. I live in the Phoenix suburbs and it gets my location within a few blocks easy.
AT&T Wireless had something like this a few years ago..
AT&T Wireless, not "The New AT&T," had a similar app in 2003 on my Nokia 3200. It was okay and worked with MapQuest from the "M-Life" menu. It cost $6.00/month so this is a better price. It did save me once when I was lost in Nashville, TN. Once Cingular came about, it vanished. This is running great on my BlackBerry Curve from T-Mobile but if my Bluetooth is on, it tries to pair with a GPS device and won't attempt to find my location but, it is a beta. 🙂
Practically GPS for non-GPS phones.
I've always wanted gps, but I've been stuck with TMob, but now I have something akin to it.
Many, many kudos google.
Curious, what phone do you have?
