tiesan01 submitted this review of the LG VX-8300:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

This VX-8300 was my boyfriend's high school phone.
The boyfriend is now husband, and this phone has lasted with nary a scratch on it from 2007-2015 (after some time spent in a drawer). I use it now as my secondary phone line, since my smartphone is huge and awkward to talk on.

I used to make fun of boyfriend for using a stupid old flip phone (with an antenna on it!!!) when he could have a shiny new LG Octane. Eventually he went to a smartphone, and the Vx-8300 sat in the drawer. Now that I have resurrected this old beast, here are some annoyances and helpful tips!

1) VCast music doesn't work anymore as a service. The phone only worked with Verizon's stupidly overpriced and spotty VCast service (was marketed as a music phone) and has external buttons on the front screen to control MP3 files. If not playing music files, the buttons are basically useless. I wish that they had additional functions, like checking text addresses or caller ID's.

2) Nubby external antenna gives the phone KILLER reception, but it is always getting stuck in the corner of my pocket. I wear skinny jeans, so fishing it out of my front pocket is sometimes awkward.

3) No easy was to add words via the phone's T9 system. No, I don't want to add a new "quick text," you piece of ducking shut. A way around this is to add the new word as an entry into your phone book. Add a fake number with it, then erase it. The phone will remember the new word even if the contact is no longer in the contacts list.

4) Battery only lasts 4 days! (Lol, kidding. 4 days is great nowadays). However, the phone uses that old LG pin charger that always seems to get stuck inside the phone. Why couldn't they have used barrel chargers like Nokia?

5) Text message memory fills up quickly. I feel like 200 texts max really isn't very many.

6) Verizon crippled this phone's bluetooth capabilities, so you are stuck with the crappy stock ringtones.

Overall, amazingly durable phone! Works totally great.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

mishqueen submitted this review of the LG VX-8300:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

There are many pros and cons to be discussed, but I would like to bring up just one that makes the biggest difference to me.

Longevity.

I got this phone when it first came out in, what was it? 2006? It is now Nov of 2011. I have dropped it hundreds of times, it has been washed, hit, dirtied, etc. I have never had another phone that didn't find some untimely death right about the time my contract was to expire. Convenient? Yes, but this phone was different.

I finally had to move on, because my dear phone was dropped into the PUGET SOUND for 5-10 minutes, then a day before it got rinsed and put in rice. I put it in the rice bowl and waited the usual few days, although I didn't expect much. No response. So we had a sad memorial service and finally made the decision to become smartphone owners. We just couldn't bear the thought of stepping down to a new, inferior regular phone.

But guess what? 1.5 weeks later, the phone came back! We did keep the smart phones, but since they have their own problems, we switch back to this one periodically.

Problems occurring after lying in the ocean:
1) the battery life is lower now...maybe 2 days inbetween charges?
2) it takes a second or two for the backlight to come on when I first open the phone
3) there are tiny watermarks (salt marks?) behind the screen, barely noticeable
4) menu stutters a bit (meaning that I press a button, and there is sometimes a pause), and occasionally due to the pausing I push the button again, which selects the wrong menu button.

All in all, I consider this almost a full recovery. From salt water. For 10 minutes. A round of applause please, for the VX8300!!! I believe we would have used this phone unhindered for 10 years.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I've owned it for over 2 years now and it will be hard to give up. It's literally been through hell and back as many times as i've dropped it and it hasn't skipped a beat. It's no i-phone but if your not into all the extra frills, i highly recommend it.

Check it out here: www.lgvx8300.org

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Mark_S submitted this review of the LG VX-8300:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Everything but the bulky size and the external antenna is perfect on this phone. No other 8000 series phone by LG comes close. I prefer the LG's in the 6000 series because they are slightly lower-end and do essentially the same job when it comes to texting and making and receiving calls. You want EV-DO, blue-tooth, and higher battery-drain from fancier displays, go with the 8000 series.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

narn3049 submitted this review of the LG VX-8300:

Overall rating: 3.5 (out of 5)

I give this phone a 3.5 because it was durable. The phone was cool, and I got the new Boulder to replace it (since replaced that as well, and this phone has stood up well.

The phone has been thrown at walls, it even was drowned in a cannoeing tipover and it still works, occasionally the screen would have lines in it and you couldnt see any thing you'd take out the battery and it would still work, despite all of that damage the phone has still worked and the battery is still ok, I have had 3 of these. This was the first one. The second one got thrown and smashed off the side of the phone i mean like the speaker on the side and smashed the screen, oh and it was not me that threw it, it was a grrrrrrrrrrrrr to halo, because my friend threw it, it had also gotten water spilled on it and worked.

third one i barely had for a week and it fell into water, i was emptying the dehimedifere and the phone dropped and the water was down, phone constantly said car kit mode, and i have to switch from it to the lg 3200 and then to the boulder. That last one even after drying didnt work,

The good features were the music buttons and the video camera. good phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Still kicking after close to 3 years. Still works great. Did buy a new battery for it. Excellent speaker phone, stereo sound. All the phones that came out to replace this model (8350 and such) don't even come close to this one, other than getting rid of the antenna and dropping some weight to it.

Pros:
Speaker Phone
Excellent call Quality
Durable

Cons:
Non for the year that it came out.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I had it for 2 long years and its very durable. I'm getting a phone soon and this is a review of the phone I had for the past 2 years. The phone has been through everything - falls, water, texting 24/7, and every wear and tear you can think of. I have actually dropped this phone in water for a good 3 seconds and nothing happened. I dropped this phone and threw it (to show my friends its durability) and it works like new. The call quality is great and the camera is good too.

Although this phone is discontinued, if you can get it I recommend it.

PROS
-durability is remarkable
-screen is good
-great call quality
-good for texting if you don't like a keypad
-great camera
-verizon is in my opinion the best service provider

CONS
-battery starts to last about 40% less after 2 years
-you cant send files with bluetooth

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

plg83 submitted this review of the LG VX-8300:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I've had this phone for almost three years. It's had it's share of call problems ( I live in a call challenged area), so reception is probably not one of it's strengths. The rest on my plan got Motorolas which consistantly have more bars than I do in the exact same area.
But...there are some things beyond compare on this phone. I'm nearly deaf, and this phone has the best sound I've ever heard. It also has the " normal" sound feature just as you would have on a regular land line, where you can hear what you say into the phone, an absolute must for a hard of hearing consumer- without that feedback when using other's cell phones, I find myself unable to hear what I just said to the person, and wondering if I even said it! This is the main reason I've not upgraded- to date I've been unable to find another phone with this feature, or even a sales person who knows what I'm talking about.

Also, the battery aand charge life has been excellent. The life is going down some now after almost three years-I usually have to charge up every 2-3 days on average- but I've never had to replace either, compared to all my motorola users, who are now on their second and third batteries, and some on second chargers as well.

I also love the front display for which you can have a wallpaper as well as the main screen, and the ability to take pictures for both, a feature I've used many many times over the years. I also use picture id for all my callers as I can't hear differences in ring tones, and that's been a great caller Id feature. The ringer and vibrate are loud and easy to feel. I loved the classic look, doesn't get dirty or scratch easily, and despite having been dropped many times, still works great.
All in all, I rate this phone 5 stars and say the only improvement I think it could have used was better call reception. I dread the day it no longer works, because I don't think I can find another that will work for me!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It worked great and all was well. Memory chip held lots of pictures and it was nice. Then recently my battery started messing up. Shutting off for no reason. Now his is doing the same, and they say the battery is "swelling" and the warranty is up. So I really only recommend this phone if you have a good battery supply or look forward to buying one. other than the battery, I think the phone is one of the best I have had.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

rossfordwoman submitted this review of the LG VX-8300:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I am on my third VX8300, but only because I love them! I opted for another one when my upgrade was available because I didn't want to "learn" a new phone, but this sucker is invincible! One of my old ones went to my son and survived his teenaged abuse until he lost it. It was the only phone he didn't actually destroy somehow. My husband would still have my other old one if it weren't at the bottom of a lake! We are hard on phones and those flimsy RAZR-types can't hold a candle to the 8300.

PROS:
Few dropped calls ever
Good size, fit for pocket, hand, face
STURDY
Speakerphone
Recorder
MP3
Caller-specific ringtones and picture ID
Set message sounds or recordings as ringtones - save MONEY!
Lasts forever it seems like
Ring-vibrate option
SD card compatible
T9 Word

CONS:
Buttons on outside of phone get pushed when pocketed, but if you don't use MP3, this isn't a big deal
Fragile cover over camera lens--if you hit it just right it will break, though this is rare
I have noticed I'm not able to store as many messages in my phone as my friends, so maybe the internal memory is limited, but I never bought an SD card for it

I can't really compare it to other phones very well because I've had this phone for so long! Loving it!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

jreisner submitted this review of the LG VX-8300:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

This phone, posthumously, earns my five stars.

I was a Verizon customer from 2002 through 2007. During that time I owned 7 Verizon phones (3 LG's, 2 Motos, 1 Samsung, 1 Kyocera). This one was the best. 5 reasons why:

1) Most comfortable phone to hold, both opened and closed - & easiest to flip
2) Best battery life (w/disabled EV-DO)
3) Smoothest, easiest to use interface & menus
4) Clearest, brightest screen
5) Most solid construction

Here's 5 bad things about this phone:

1) Outside buttons get pressed in pockets and bad, embarassing things happen
2) Speakerphone only works when the phone is open
3) Bluetooth kills battery life 3X faster
4) I'm reaching here, but minor software glitches (fixed by upgrade flashes @Verizon)
5) Can't think of any more

I have missed this phone every single day since I stopped using it 1 year ago. I don't think AT&T or anyone, will ever have such a great phone again. I wish it had been produced for GSM, 'cause I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I've had to send it back three times now.

PROS:
-micro SD slot
-good ringtones

CONS:
-bad picture quality
-terrible sound
-speaker just plain sucks
-buttons fall out
-tiny battery life
-turns off if I set it down the least bit hard
-bulky
-loses calls a lot

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

dave115 submitted this review of the LG VX-8300:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

This review is long overdue. I am one of the pickiest cell phone users around. It is time I gave praise to the best phone ever... The LG 8300. Some of the phones I owned prior to this included the LG 6000, LG 8000, LG 8100. I purchased this phone two years ago ... the day it came out. I am also one of those gadget guys that insists on having the latest and greatest. I upgraded to the LG8600, LG8700, LG 9400, LG 8350, Dare, and Chocolate 3. None of those phones met my needs more than the good ol' 8300. I either kept those phones on my additional lines or returned it within the grace period. The 8300 has remained my primary phone for the past 2 years. I like it so much that I bought two more on eBay. It's a shame this phone was discontinued.

Pros
1. Excellent reception and call quality
2. Speaker phone quality is excellent. The speakers on the side of the phones work well.
3. Extremely durable. This phone has been dropped many times.
4. Text Text Text!! I am an avid texter.... I text more than I talk. I prefer T9 over a QWERTY keypad. I prefer raised buttons instead of flat. Touchscreen is not for me. If you are wicked fast with T9... This is the phone for you.
5. Easily opens and closes with one hand.
6. Camera - very sharp
7. Strong vibrate - I keep it in on vibrate and in my jean pocket all the time.
8. The ability to LOCK the phone by holding down the # key. I don't know why this feature was removed from future phones. This is a great feature.
9. The stub antenna has better reception than an intenna.
10. Mobile web is fast.
11. Flip phone - a personal preference.
12. Good battery life.

Cons
1. Speaker button is too close to the CLR button. This can mess up one's texting when trying to text without looking.
2. Unable to read texts on the external screen. External screen should have been made as crisp at the LG 8100.

Again.... This is the best phone I ever had.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

NYCGirl83 submitted this review of the LG VX-8300:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I' ve had this phone for almost 2 years already. I'm debating on whether i should buy the LG Dare or the Voyager. However, this phone has been amazing the last 2 years and here's why:

Pro's
-excellent signal (including the subway system while other people's cell phones received little or no reception)
-Camera took high quality pics and video
-Speaker phone was clear
-I have dropped the phone numerous times and only received a scratch on the phone

Con's
-doesn't hold many text messages in the inbox or outbox
-internet is slow
-after 2 years, my screen is starting to "burn in"

I would recommend this phone to anyone, although by now i believe it's discontinued. LG proves to make strong, sturdy phones that last a long time.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
