yanike submitted this review of the Audiovox SMT 5600 / SPV C500 (HTC Typhoon):

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

This phone is a life saver. It does everything I need and more. Everything is great on this phone. Windows Player is awesome and Internet is great (Opera Mini and GMail makes this phone even better). I've always liked this phone, but now I LOVE IT. Long story short, it helped me do my college work online when the PC was down for a week. I T9ed college essays and more. This phone is impressive!!!

pros
Windows Mobile
Call Quality
Screen Display
Video and Audio playback and recording :)
Everything else not mentioned in cons

cons
Camera quality is not the best, but not the worst. Good enough to live with.
Speaker is great, but hard to hear in really noisy areas.

Bottom Line
If you can get this phone, get it. I got mine off eBay and now I love shopping on eBay :) If you can get the Cingular 2125, I would get that instead because it has Windows Mobile 5 and is an upgrade to this phone :)

Read more into the Cingular 2125 here --> https://www.phonescoop.com/phones/user_reviews.php?phone=800

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

DaHans submitted this review of the Audiovox SMT 5600 / SPV C500 (HTC Typhoon):

Overall rating: 3.5 (out of 5)

I love this phone; the size, the look, features and abilities all amaze me. Easy to sync, layout is straight forward. I do not get my work email on it due to my work having restrictions, but I easily get my personal email. Texting on it is great. The camera and video are...well phone quality, but good enough for what you end up using it for.
However, mine just keeps on breaking. Either it freezes up, the screen dies, or keeps saying SIM card missing when all is up to date. I am on my third one in just over a year. Covered under warranty, thank god. I reccommend this phone, but make sure you back it up on your computer, it WILL break and you do now want to loose all your data.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

pittpanther06 submitted this review of the Audiovox SMT 5600 / SPV C500 (HTC Typhoon):

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

This phone has impressed me at every turn. I did lots of research on which phone to purchase. I am a former Sprint customer who was fed up with the lack of CDMA coverage in my hometown (suburb of Philadelphia). I also liked the idea of being able to unlock a phone and use it abroad if necessary.

A colleague in London had the Orange C500 version of the phone, and always would flaunt the features, the SD card capability, etc. I was jealous, and did the research.

I got the phone for $99 after rebate in late December and have not looked back. I've recently customized the home screen so that it looks AWESOME and have huge 1 GB MiniSD card in it.

I cannot rave enough about the cool little stuff you can do on this - I have a Nintendo Emulator on it and people have done lots to hack the phone so that you can add other GSM bands (make it a Quad Band World Phone for example), and the Outlook Syncing is seamless.

My first SMT5600 had issues though. My Green "Talk" button worked great for about a week and then it stopped functioning. Also the phone would only Sync for about 2 mins and then disconnect itself. This was very hard when there was lots of mail or appts to sync or I wanted to extract or insert a file onto my card. Cingular's return/warranty policy was awesome and I just received a BRAND NEW SMT5600 that I will treat a bit better.

HINT: use clear packaging tape to protect the screen and keep out pocket lint. I will also be getting a case (a rubber one that is form fitting) -- the magnesium black casing does not look as cool if it is dinged up.

The phone comes with stereo headphones and MP3s sound AMAZING through them. I have also hacked the phone so I can listen to SIRIUS satellite radio with it -- pretty neat and a lot of fun (use google -- it's easy to do).

Overall, I love the customization, the features and the unit is eye candy. If you can still find it, its a bargain! A great choice, just take care of the baby!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I had inadvertently made a call to someones voice mail and the speaker-phone engaged as well. You can hear the phone make all of its little noises in you pocket too, so keep the keypad locked.

As far as functionality, I would say this is the absolute best smartphone/pda available without a QWERTY keyboard.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

LetsRip submitted this review of the Audiovox SMT 5600 / SPV C500 (HTC Typhoon):

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I thought I would provide feedback from the perspective SMT-5600 PDA capabilities as a high priority -- the biggest draw for me was the size, as I didn't want to carry around a bulky Treo. After having the phone for the past 2 months, here are my observations, including converting from a Palm device:

- Leaving 'graffiti' and going to 't9' for text input is a big adjustment (as well as not having a touch screen). I actually like the t9 functionality now (don't use multi-tap much), and my list of often used words/terms is growing. I think my speed of text input now is about the same as with graffiti.

- The screen is a BIG improvement from my (monochrome) Palm Vx. Even small fonts appear nicely. The ability to modify the home screen is a nice touch.

- Some equivalent built-in apps provided on the Palm OS are noticeably missing. Specifically, the synchronization of Notes and a useful Search option (the Tasks feature is also weak). I ended up purchasing Oxios To-Do, Power Calendar, SmartPhoneNotes, and SmartPhoneFind. The culmination of these apps surpasses what I had with the Palm, though I had to shell out $$$.

- It is much easier to find freeware Palm apps compared to Windows Mobile. Also, the purchased apps are more expensive for Windows Mobile. Java midlet apps are another option, which I plan to explore further.

- Being able to explore the contents of the phone via ActiveSync is really nice. A major complaint I hear from people with other phones is that they have to transfer all of their files via the cell network. Since this phone has a USB port, you can easily transfer files/folders back and forth using a desktop PC (you do have to get used to the unique folder organization).

- I was able to easily unlock the phone (using free instructions from the internet) and have used SIMs from both Cingular and T-Mobile.

Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase, and even more happy when I can find free/cheap applications for Windows Mobile!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

kgloverii submitted this review of the Audiovox SMT 5600 / SPV C500 (HTC Typhoon):

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

This phone is the best. My Motorola MPX200 finally died on me, so I had to get a new phone. I considered numerous models, including the RAZR. However, the ease of use with the Windows Mobile simply made me want to stay with that platform.

I got this phone, skeptical at best. I LOVE IT!! It is the perfect phone! People at work ask me all the time what it is. They all want to get one too.

The signal strength is good, it is easy to use, and the style is good too. It fits well into my pocket.

I have no Cons to report. It has every feature I need, and more!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

rifter submitted this review of the Audiovox SMT 5600 / SPV C500 (HTC Typhoon):

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

Recently purchased the SMT 5600. I tend to be picky on what kind of phones I like and wanted to try out this one.

Pros:

Large screen.
Mobile Windows-call me a sucker for gadgets, I always wanted a smart phone for things like internet and email.
Windows Media Player with a 256 MB memory card puts Motorola to shame when it comes to MP3 players.
The menu is user friendly if you know Windows.
Nice form factor and sturdy. It sells solid and not fragile. The phone looks like a regular phone without the feeling of looking weird.
Reception. Compared with the GSM phones I've had in the past I could get good reception with one bar of signal strength without the call dropping.
Internet browser. If you use the mobile internet as extensively as I do, the quality of the webpage comes close to the real thing.
Instantly synchs with your computer. No problem here.

CONS:
The menus can be a little slow at times and a bit buggy. Just a nuisance.
The ring and volume could be louder. A call could come in if I'm in a noisy area and I wouldn't know it.
Not a flip phone. I prefer flip phones due to the clam shell over the bar phone. I really hate having to unlock my keypad every time when the phone presses against something and locks the keypad .
The rocker takes some getting used to. You could accidentally double-click on a wrong menu item. Again just a nuisance.

I really like this phone since it grows on you for the first time.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The most calls I get are people with Treos...the self proclaimed king of the hill. In recent months I have been reading, reviewing and testing several different smart phones to find the right match for me. I now beleive I have found the gold of the smartphone world.

I have had the 5600 for nearly a month..I have had no problems with it whatsoever.

Pros:
-Bluetooth...works great headsets and thinkoutside keyboard.
-WM10...its an Mp3 player and movie player
-WM 2003...fast! Easy procssing and fast response times.
-Screen...bright, colorful screen has just enough room for email, browsing, and media.
-Reception...by far, compared to the other smartphones I have tested..this phones RF (signal reception) is the true king of the hill.
-Size...this is not a brick phone like the treo, 6700, or bb..it feels like a sturdy nokia, but has features like a treo!
-Exp. Memory..a mini sd slot is underneath the battery...I have a 1.0 gb in mine...provides plenty of room for movies, music, apps, and pictures.
-Customizable....there are tons..and tons of freeware and shareware themes and applications available for this platform..

Cons:
-The camera is not the best, but its great for snapping shots of business cards, and faces for photo caller id.
-Keypad..email and sms text entry is standard like a normal phone.. but if needed, a bluetooth keyboard will solve that issue... ;)

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

SpacedOut submitted this review of the Audiovox SMT 5600 / SPV C500 (HTC Typhoon):

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I have owned this phone for a little over a week, and I must say, I'm extremely pleased with it. It is the perfect compromise between form and function. Granted, one could purchase a full-fledged PDA phone, but personally I've noticed those to be a bit bulky and overbearing. This strikes a nice balance, and is small enough that I don't even notice it when I have it on me.

PROS:
- Speakerphone/Ringtone speaker is VERY loud, yet is still able to be crisp and clear.
- The screen is exceptional. I've never seen a screen this good in a standard form factor phone.
- Feels solid and nicely built.
- Camera, despite being only VGA quality, takes fairly good pictures (much better than my old SE t610).
- Windows Mobile 2003. What more can I say, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of third-party apps, and it feels enough like a PDA without being "too much".
- Synchronization is flawless (with WinXP/Outlook 2003).
- USB charging is GREAT! Whenever I go to work, a friends house, etc. I only need to bring the USB cable if I know they have a computer, instead of the whole power brick.

CONS:
- VGA camera (I know I mentioned this in the pro's, but a 1MP+ camera and/or flash would be better)
- The number buttons are a bit too far below the phone's center of gravity. Sometimes, when dialing a number, it almost feels like the phone will slip out of my hands. But, I'd gladly endure this to allow for the large screen!

One other thing, I have had zero problems with the nav button, unlike what has been noted in other reviews. I enjoy the ease of vertical scrolling, and haven't had any mis-clicks.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

This thing is the only thing I carry on the go, I update my calendar during business calls via my notebook on the plane, and by the time I touch down and take my 5600 off of flight mode I pop my bluetooth in and I have no worries!

Cons
Minimal if any this may be a slightly difficult structure for some first timers.

Pros
Super light, good camera if your not shooting a full length picture, great outlook linking process. The beam link is even faster than the RAZR. The sound and reception quality are both supreme Good Job Cingular you guys struck gold with this one!

This phone is the works for a quick easy was to base a start up company on your wire less handset and still be incognito!!!!!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

sdgmcdon submitted this review of the Audiovox SMT 5600 / SPV C500 (HTC Typhoon):

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

I tried this phone with Cingular and aside from the middle paddle button being a little difficult to get use to and the fact that it has a camera (I can't stand phones with cameras) it is quite possibly the best phone out there for the money.

The PDA functionality works quite well and for my use of a PDA/phone it doesn't matter that it lacks a qwerty keyboard, I only input on my computer and just transfer to my cell/PDA to read from it so not having the qwerty and thus being able to significantly reduce the size of the phone was really nice.

Overall just an incredibly nice phone for the price, I wish I still had it, but Cingular in my area drops calls like theres no tomorrow, so I had to give it up to go back to Verizon.

Oh well...

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

jlgarcia75 submitted this review of the Audiovox SMT 5600 / SPV C500 (HTC Typhoon):

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

Yeah, sure, this phone is "feature rich" but it is missing some key functionality that makes it annoying to own.

PROS:
1. You've read enough of these from everyone else.

I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned the following cons...

CONS:
1. There is no way to sync the date and time with a network. When you first get the phone you have to enter the date and time manually. Then, if you travel, you have to manually change the time zone (three menus deep) so that your phone will show the correct time.

2. If you carry over the SIM card from a previous phone there is no way to transfer the numbers from the SIM card to phone memory. The bad part is that contacts in the SIM card can only have one number associated with them. If you want to add multiple numbers to your contacts, you can't!

3. The "action" button on the phone is annoying. You are supposed to press the middle of the joy stick button to select menu items. Fine. But it often moves to a different menu selection when you press the button so you end up selecting the wrong menu item.

These negative features make the phone annoying enough for me to return it. Thank goodness Cingular has the 30-day return policy.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I was standing right next to someone with a Nokia random looking phone on the Cape, they had 4 bars, I had "no service". Same network. So I got to noticing that I didn't have a signal much less a strong one very often at all. My Treo 650 performed got a better signal. But, it locks up all the time and turns on for no apparent reason.

It doesn't matter how great the phone is, if, you can't use it as a phone! I returned it for the Mpx220 which I should receive soon.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

cellboy submitted this review of the Audiovox SMT 5600 / SPV C500 (HTC Typhoon):

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I just switched from my treo 650 to this a few days ago and i cant say i miss it. this phone has al the features i liked abot my treo, and the one feature i hated about my treo is fixed. The size. i think the treo is awsome but its so freaking big that i elt like i was carring a small child in my pocket. and the price on those things is a smidge high as well. i think that this phone is great for a number of reasons. I think that it definatly has its cons like mini sd under the battery is a goofy place, the whole joystick/toggle bar is odd to get used to. i do miss the touch screen of the treo. and the camera is only good in good lighting where as my treo camera was good even in dim inside lights. it can seem to lag if im moving through the menu too fast, and i miss the full qwerty of the treo. but those are all things that i would gladly trade for the much smaller size of this phone/pc as apposed to the treo which is very much a pda/phone. overall i think this phone has all of the nescessary features with a few more added in. so if you want to spend half as much as the treo and get the same functionality this is the one for you

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I used this phone when I worked for my previous wireless employer, and LOVED it in every sense of the word. Great signal, no dropped call problems, great battery, awesome features! The OS was smooth, applications included were great. I downloaded Microsoft Streets and Maps, and the maps that I needed. Browswer was above average, I could pull up just about any website that I tried to. The camera was VGA but better than most, much better than the V551 which my co-workers used. Video was much longer also, especially if you use an SD card.

PROs
= Bluetooth
= Video & camera better than most
= OS works great, no flaws or bugs
= Long battery life
= The whole phone rocks!!!

CONs
= Not a 1.3mp camera
= Not CDMA (no longer using Cingular b/c of where I now live)

I absolutely loved this phone while I had it. Sold it because I now live in a non-GSM area and can't use it. Bummer! I have used about 20 different phones, including the TREO 650, Blackberry, Nokia's and others...this one is by far best!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
