false.....vibrate/ring

Dec 28, 2005 by deejal

to the person that said that ALL samsungs do not have vibrate/ring feature is false. that is a false statement as all of them with the exception of the 497 will ring and vibrate at the same time.

Samsung Quality! Low end phone, though...

Nov 26, 2005 by natedawgrules

I've had this phone for 3.5 months now. This is my first phone but I used my mom's LG 4050 before we upgraded to family talk with Cingular. This phone is a major improvement over the cheap LG. It's very easy to use, including settings as well as in-call menus. The main motive for buying this phone was the price for a Samsung with an external caller ID.

PROs:
1) Great internal Screen.
2) Easy to use features.
3) Ringtone quality and volume (I keep it on 3 out of 5 for my MP3 ringtone!)
4) Price.
5) Battery Life!

I used to bash people who gave phones bad reviews for call quality. I believed that your carrier is what call quality depends on. But after having this phone, I think the actual handset might have just as much to do with call quality as the network.

CONs:
1) CALL QUALITY! (Service and quality are EXCELLENT everywhere BUT my house. We had great service with AT&T and a crappy LG phone so what's the deal?)
2) Speakerphone (Like the ringtones the speakerphone just turns up the volume on the ear piece speaker. It's decent quality when your environment is quiet but if it's loud, you have to hold the phone to your ear to hear it, even on speaker.)
3) External display is monochromatic. (I would have liked to have had a color external screen.)
4) ALL SAMSUNGS DON'T RING AND VIBRATE AT THE SAME TIME!! (The phone is equipped with a vib./silent setting. The phone will vibrate 3 times, then start audibly ringing but not both at the same time like all other phones...?)

Overall this is a great entry level phone. Call quality is excellent if you don't live in the only apparent dead spot in your state. If you want good calls and a few features at a great price this phone is for you. If you are a techie and you want features galore (like I do) you'd better spend some more money. (I'm thinking of upgrading to the Nokia 6102.)

yes. a solid 2.5. It is surprising to me that no one has mentioned the fact that the email client on this phone does not work! It could be a t-mobile issue, but when Im trying to access my pop3 acct while in tzones, it says "attempt failed. try another address". Now, this is BS because I have the motorola A630 and my pop3 works fine in tzone mode... same sim card, same carrier. Therefore:

PROS:
lightweight
great reception

CONS:
email client does not work
no camera
annoying speakerphone that must stay open
no multiple numbers for people's names
flashing txt message image when SIM card full (I think I have a txt all the time, but I dont)
poor alarm clock software
weak vibrate

this is a great phone if you talk on the phone and that's all. not good for email, txting or camera.

497 = Great phone!

I use Cingular, in the Westchester County area of New York. This phone has met my every need. I tend to review a phone on what it has feature wise and what it can do. I don't judge it on what it doesn't have. If you want bluetooth, or a camera w/ video, or whatever, then spend the money and get a phone that has all that...then judge it!
Pros:
Excellent sound quality.
Earpiece is nice and loud when holding it up to my ear.
Rings are loud as well.
Very good speakerphone. Loud and clear.
Phone is light and sleek looking.
Reception is awesome. (I live in basement apartment.)
Super battery life.

Cons:
In order to use speaker, you must press 2 buttons and the phone has to remain open.
No Edge, means slow internet, however I don't use the internet.
Of course, a normal headset won't work...you need to get a special one.

All I use the phone for, is to make a call and receive a call. Once in a while I will text. So for me this phone is perfect and it's also very inexpensive. The cons that affect me are not that bad so I give it a 5 out of 5!

Very nice indeed!

Does everything it is supposed to do and does them all well. Just received the x495 as a backup phone (to my P910a) ... no camera, MP3 player, add-in memory cards etc but for a new cell phone user or someone needing a solid phone "that just works simply and solidly" this could be the one.

Pros:
+ Usability is excellent, simple & straightforward
+ strong RF (signal), perhaps not as strong as a Nokia or my P910a but pretty close.
+ excellent speaker-phone
+ clear audio for you & the caller
+ sharp, vibrant screen
+ menus are simple, easy to follow
+ 3 different alarms, great as an alarm clock even works to wake you when the phone is powered off.
+ does WAP/ T-Mobile t-zones nicely
+ good battery life, 2-3 days between charging
+ Outside screen "can" be seen easily in the dark, just hold volume up side button for 1-2 seconds

Cons:
+ no email
+ no easy syncing to get address book, tasks & calendar entrees to/from a PC

Still a "5/5" and a great entry-midrange phone ... it just works, no glitches at all (so far).

Great Phone for the Simple Person

This phone is a wonderful phone if you don't need all the extras that make the phone more then just a phone.

Pros: Great Speakerphone (always can hear)
Very Clear
Love the color screen (easy to see)
Easy to understand
Cute ringtones and easy to download other ringtones like mp3

Cons: Can't see the outside screen very well not enough light
Weak alarm clock
Hate Predictive Text

Other then the few cons it is a really eaasy to understand phone. I would reccomend this phone to anyone.

Great Phone

May 7, 2011 by ILovemyphone2   updated May 14, 2013

This is a great basic flip phone for a first phone or someone who doesn't want all the extra features of some phones of the time. ...Sadly mine went through the wash! I was so sad! I had to get a replacement phone, which in my opinion wasn't as good as this phone. I kept the X495 without using it for a few years and, amazingly, it dried out and is working like new now...I would use it but I wanted a camera so I got a Moto W490 a few years ago. I still miss my little X495 but I wanted a camera...If only the X495 Had a camera...

-Pros:
-Flip Phone
-Tough (Went through the washing machine and dried out)
-Easy to use
-You can customize the dialing numbers to be rainbow colored. I don't know why but I like that.

-Cons:
-Not a lot of features (Lacks a camera)
-Thick when flip is closed (Of course that was common back then)
-I can't remember too great but it seems like the battery died quickly. I think I had to charge it every night.

Overall:
Great little phone for a beginner or someone who doesn't want all the features the new phones have and just want a phone. I wish it wasn't discontinued or that they were selling newer versions of it. The X495 was the first cell phone I ever owned. :)
I would surely recommend this phone.

Samsung X495 T-mobile, an honest review

Nov 8, 2010 by narn3049

I got this phone spring 2005? possibly 04, around that time. I got it because my t327, had the 8 key stuck (which i later just took off) and I got a different job that gave me my own phone.

I chose the Red X495, because it looked cool back then. It also looked (and was) durable. So I got it. I had it for 2 years. I dropped the phone, and it always would work afterward. I never got it wet though, so I can't test that. But how it broke is in snapped in half (I actually did when I got mad over a breakup, lol) and had to get it replaced. The phone was awesome up until that point, and I'm glad I got to own it.

Durable but cheap

Apr 3, 2010 by allicat323

Really people? All you can do is complain about how cheap it is? I loved this thing for well over 3 years. The first one I had was thrown, dropped, slammed, and otherwise abused and nothing went wrong with it. As with all phones, it did finally die for the last time when I dropped it on hard tile floor for the umpteenth time (accident). So I took my grandma's, same phone. Within a week or so I cracked the top corner open on accident but it worked fine. It still works, I just wanted a camera.

Pros:
Small, fits in the hand wonderfully
Color screen
Attractive color options (I had basic white but I really like the red/silver option)
Decent signal where you expect it
Amazing battery life
You could close the phone when using a headset.
Fairly customizable with group settings, individual ringtones, renamable ringtones, etc.

Cons:
-VERY Basic phone. Fine if you're not looking for a lot, but yes, it is a basic phone.
-Short on games. There were two on mine: Bubble smile which is a timed grouping game, and some snowball game I never did figure out. Even my Dad's OLD bar phone had snake.
-I will grant there is not much for wallpapers, but you can go to TZones and get some promos there or buy. I had a Walk the Line poster on mine.
-No camera. I was fine without it but toward the end of my phone I wanted it.
-Not Bluetooth. I know this phone predates it but I got tired of using the cord.
-FLIMSY headset! The spring in the clip fell out so I could never make it work. Also, low volume. I couldn't be doing anything else, so it was pointless.

My final point, it lost signal in Walmart and a few spots around town. But I'm willing to call that a cheap phone with outdated technology. The next two phones I had got okay signal where I previously had none.

I like my phone. Get over the cheap. Other than cheap-phone-itis, it's a terrific, simple to use phone for old people, first-time users, and those who prefer simple over pretty.
