Good and bad

Dec 25, 2004 by codymitch

First of all I love this phone and the features it has and the things you can do with it. Now if only all of those features worked as advertised and/or improved. Im seriously thinking of taking this phone back to Best Buy and maybe getting the Moto V551.

Pros:
Great and large screen
Great looking phone

Cons:
Camera is Horrible
Battery is Horrible
You can send files from to the phone with bluetooth(and if you can I cant figure out how to)
At times while my friends other moto. phone have full bars, this one has none.
Often takes me about 15 mins. to get one text message (and I have full bars)
Takes about one minute for this phone to start up

No reps.know anything about this phone! I taught the cingular people about this phone most of the time, they just supplied it to me.

Like it more every day

At first I wasn't overwhelmed by this phone, but the more I find out what it can do, the more I like it.

PROS:
-Better reception than my old Samsung S307.
-Sound quality is good even with only one bar.
-Synch's very easily with Outlook. I'll use the calendar feature frequently.
-Contacts uses Outlook format and stores multiple numbers under one name.
-Bluetooth sound quality is good.
-Can play stereo MP3's (adapter available at Radio Shack to connect stereo headphones)
-Can download documents fairly easily. I have 2 .pdf files stored that look great (but you need good eyesight).
-Customizable MP3 ringtones, graphics, etc.
-Good graphics and large screen (i.e. shows lots of info at once)
-Voice dialing easy to use (but no bluetooth)

Cons:
-Sound volume is low.
-E-mail setup is confusing (still trying to get it to work right)
-GPRS seems slow and can be confusing to configure.
-Clamshell isn't top quality, although when open, it has a very nice appearance.

Camera is okay. If the volume were louder, I'd give this phone a 5. Also, it takes some time to read the manual to be able to take advantage of all of the capabilities of this phone. If you're not inclined to do that, you won't realize the full capabilities of this phone.

First Moto .. Last Moto

I just came over to Cingular from Sprint and decided to go with Motorola for the first time.. This is the biggest rush job I've ever seen in my life.

PROS
- Custom MP3 ringtones are nice and loud
- Sharp "expensive phone look"
- SD mini memory capable (128mb fits about 25-30 mp3s)
- Can play WMV movies in media player

CONS (where do I start, lol)
- Reception.. at my house my friend has FULL bars on her Moto v220 (a lot cheaper phone), guess what I have? Between zero and two bars.. people call, goes straight to my VM 50% of the time.

- Ear piece volume .. You cannot hear anybody at the loudest setting, even on outdoor profile. You HAVE to turn on speaker-phone to hear them. It sucks too, because I'll be at a public place and I don't want everybody and their momma hearing my conversation.

- Camera .. For Moto to brag it's a 1.3 mega-pix camera, this has to be the worst camera on a high end phone I've ever seen. Want a picture? Has to be daytime and sunny, cause nothing else will come out. The video camera is just as worse, the sound and picture both suck. Also did I mention, no zoom on the video. It's real grainy, like an old school web camera from 97/98. Why did they even put a flash on it? It doesn't even work at all!

I will definitely be looking for a new phone to replace this $400 piece of sh..

Great potential, awful execution

I've tried other smartphones/PDA phones, especially the Samsung i330 and i500. I didn't need a PDA, but needed Outlook sync and such. Ever since my StarTac died years ago, I have longed for Motorola's simplicity, intuitive design, and reliability. So when the battery started dying on my i330 phone, I was really excited to see that Motorola seemed to have designed exactly the phone I needed: essentially, more phone than PDA, but still with PDA versatility.

Not so. The phone is shoddy at best. Reception is poor. The volume is awful, even with the software update. The speakerphone is necessary merely to amplify the volume to normal earpiece volume. The max speaker volume is similar to the LOWEST volume setting on the Sharp phone I bought as a replacement!

The phone also emits an odd, repeating, electronic buzzing that is picked up by speakers, the phone's earpiece, and any hands-free earpieces. I don't know if it is the oddness of the sound or if the speakers are emitting an electrical impulse, but it sends chills down my spine when I hear it.

A camera is just a frill for me, but this camera is also awful. The flash is a dull LED flashlight, and the pictures (w/ or w/out the flash) are shockingly poor for a hi res camera.

The other problem is with the Windows OS. It is not very intuitive and is very difficult to navigate.

I researched this phone extensively, comparing it to several others before I bought it. I read how the software update would resolve most of the initial problems. I tried the phone for a full month to give it a shot, hoping I would get used to it. I tried several different models to see if I had just received a lemon: nope.

As for the software update, it has not been available for the past TWO MONTHS on Motorola's website. I received a copy of one update from a friend that was supposed to at least fix the volume problem, and all the problems still existed.

In short, I had every reason to love this phone, and hated it.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I have just bought this phone from best buy and since i was not a new customer i had to pay $543.42usd. I got the phone home and played around with it and now i HATE IT.Waste of money.yea the bluetooth is nice and loud with your car(BMW), but alone the speaker is horrible the speaker phone is horrible and the phone has so many problems,it keeps on acting up, like software glitches or something. Motorola needs to recall this phone and perfect it!!!

Not what you want trust me!!

I was looking for a phone that has a good calander, bluetooth, camera, and a good speaker phone, the mpx 220 promised them all.

I spent days upon days doing my homework, I am a retail sales rep for cingular, so I know my phones. I looked and looked and all that turned up was the mpx 220 I read the reviews and asked others but I got mixed responses so I said I will give it a try myself, well here we go!

Pros:
voice recognition
Other than that because of the price NON!

Cons:
Bluetooth does not support voice dial
speakerphone is Junk!!
Camera should not be called a megapixel
It is extremely hard to use I am a cell phone expert and it was hard for me to use!!
The software that comes with it is almost useless.

In closing do your self a favor do not waste your money and remember 50,000 screaming Elvis fans cant all be wrong.

Horible phone and company

Motorola what were you thinking? I've had this phone for a few months now and must say the camera is a joke, speaker phone is pathetic, it's not nearly loud enough other than in a quite room and already after a few months, I'm having the charging problem that everyone is complaining about. I must say the hardware build on this phone is just sad.

This phone should definitely have been recalled, if Motorola puts this garbage into the market, I will definitely buy another phone from them. I've had over 10 cell phones and all performed as expected, this most definitely does not !

By the way, I did update to the 3.46 most recent ROM, and have tried other ROMs as well.

All dressed up with no place to go...

Aside from the fundamental expectations for functionality of a cell phone, I cannot provide any exemplary 'pros' for the mpx220. I migrated from AT&T to Cingular in Feb. 2005 and purchased my mpx220 at that time...saying goodbye to one of the most functional phones I had ever used (it was stolen) - the Nokia 6160.

I am very disappointed, as are many, with what Moto marketed this phone to be. I did extensive research prior to my decision to put forth a significant financial contribution to Cingular/Moto and unfortunately was unaware at the time of 'phonescoop.'

My major concerns at this point are the following:

Volume on the handset is ridiculous. I have had my volume level set at maximum since I bought the phone and tend to use speakerphone volume when I really need to hear the person on the other end of the phone.

Battery life is anything but robust and talk time/standby come nowhere near the purpoted claims. I use my phone simply as a phone - no additional applications, etc. and I still only get an hour of talk time before I receive the 'low battery' notification. Standby has proven to be less than 12 hours.

Bluetooth headset...where to start? First, the headset cannot be used with voice recognition on this phone...so what's the point of 'wireless' if I have to be holding my phone to make every call? Second, severe 'feedback' to every recipient of a call using my headset. I have exchanged the headset twice and it has now been determined that the phone is the culprit...not the headset(started with the HS810 and am now on the HS850) - my reception is crystal clear, but the other end is the major problem.

The phone, although only 3 months old, has begun turning off on its own, freezing mid-dial and has now begun losing data in my 'call history.' Dilemma...to replace the phone or to 'downgrade' to the offered V551.

Don't buy this phone unless you enjoy a challenge and have no need to use the phone to even 50% of its purported capability.

Appears Safe to Buy One Now

I received my MPx220 from Cingular (ordered on the 15th through Louisiana business dept.) on Dec 20th; it is version 1.3

I e-mailed Motorola support and they stated that there never was a "recall" on the MPx220, and that the software versions are installed based on request/specs from the wireless phone co.

I have been playing w/the cool functions and trying to get a feel for the phone for only 3 days now, but here it goes...

PROS:
Beautiful outer shell, don't like the plastic battery cover, but as long as it stays tight, I don't care

Very adequate ringer tone volumes; suprisingly the alert tones are soft and you can't adjust (not that I have found)

fast internet connections

camera works VERY nice if you set resolution on highest and adjust the light setting

All in all I'm pleased with this phone and have rec'd to friends already

CONS:
User Manual (this doesn't even have anything to do w/phone specifically) sucks bad. There is way too basic info and only tells you how to access about 1/4 of it's capability

Confusing menu system (likely my fault as I'm not used to the phone and poor assistance w/manual)

Can't figure out how to get photo caller ID working, and the manual is of little use

Summary:
Hey, for the money, its a great phone. Lots of gadgets to keep you busy. All of the complaints w/versions before 1.30 have apparently been fixed, SO GO FOR IT!!

going back today

Sep 19, 2005 by biggshaad

i just bought the phone on Saturday morning and I'm taking it back today (monday)
just like the rest of us i love a new phone so when i seen that cingular re-released the mpx 220 i got it asap. but its really not worth the rush.
the camera sucks which i read here so i already knew that. the quality of hearing wasn't that great (i'm going back to my razr v3) the signal is OK (Seattle, WA.) and the applications are slow.
it did sync with my computer so you problem there.
i just thought that there would be a little more with this phone

the ringers aren't that loud
its hard to tell if you missed a call or a text because the front screen turns off

and just little things that i'm used to in a phone this didn't have so it's going back right now.
