Motorola v180 - a good phone that doesn't last

Apr 22, 2006 by dizz2b

This phone was my first venture into owning a Motorola since I had the BIG one in the late 80's. I have had Nokias since. I loved this phone until my hub's phone display went bonkers. It was almost as if each row of pixels got put back in the wrong order. Then a week later the outside display of my phone went blank. Both were under warranty so we got new ones. NOW a little more than a year later (and out of warranty) his phone doesn't work, all you hear is static on a call. MY phone is starting with the static. We are definitely going back to a Nokia phone.

Pros: Nice looking, comfortable in hand, great ring tone sound, great signal all over the island (Oahu, Hawaii), nice screen, nice colors, good features for us since we didn't want a camera phone.

Cons: Sounds over speaker phone come in weak, didn't seem to last long.

First Phone

This is my first cell phone ever, so I cannot compare it to others. Th main thing I do not like is the weak vibrate mode. I have lost many calls because the vibrate mode is not strong enough to be felt.

Okay phone

The phone had some issues, but it was 10 times the phone that my Nokia was.

The phone rang for no reason. Buttons would stop working or go into another part of the menu.

The phone always worked when I needed it too though. No dropped calls, and they were clear.

It was a free phone. You get what you pay for. It gave me a year before I upgraded it.

I wouldn't have paid money for it, but for free, I can't really complain too much.

constant beeping from my pocket

Motorola went out of their way to make the volume buttons on the outside of the phone (exposed even when closed) make a loud, stupid beeping noise. These buttons are not recessed, so about three times a day this phone makes this stupid beeping noise from my pocket with EVERY step I take until I pull it out and carry it in my hand. (And no, I'm not fat and wearing tight pants.) No, there's no way to turn it off that T-Mobile or I can find, except to turn off the ringer, which kinda defeats the purpose of carrying the phone in my pocket anyway. I guess the point Motorola is trying to make is that this phone should always be carried in your hand and looked at. Who knows if Motorola knows how to turn off this beeping, since they don't offer customer support on this phone.

I have to carry this phone for work, but at least I've saved two friends from making this Motorola Mistake by showing them how obnoxious this phone is to carry around.

Good, solid phone

Wow. Seems some people just have no luck with this thing.

Personally, I've found it to be a -very- good phone. I've never had a single dropped call, my signal is rarely below three bars (bowling alley discluded), and the other features are exactly what I find useful.

I work in food service, and keep my phone in my pocket. This leads to lots of banging around and the like, and wandering from room temperature to freezing temperatures to rather warm temperatures (90ºF and higher). Even given the abuse it takes, it just keeps on truckin'. I would certainly recommend this phone for those who want something that includes decent features at a decent price. Having owned the phone for nearly two years, I can attest to its general durability.

PROS:::
-Great voice quality
-MP3 ringtone capability
-Good, loud ringers and strong vibration
-Front face caller ID, with customizable ringer ids for contacts
-Decent battery life
-Easy to use menus
-Speakerphone for hands-free use

CONS:::
-Front faceplate easily scratched (I've put on a different face, however, and this became a non-issue)
-Not much memory for storing tones and pictures
-Somewhat small screen

Must have gotten a lucky phone

I've had my V180 (cingular) for 10 months now and it's worked pretty well. The case is pretty banged up from being dropped several times and the outside display is hard to read unless it's backlit. That was caused by me leaving it in a torrential downpour for 4 hours, somehow the phone survived.

Reception is pretty good except at my house which is a black hole for nearly all carriers. Though my friend's Nokia does get slightly better reception than my V180. I did get somewhat better reception buy having Cingular pop in a newer SIM card.

I really like the fact that it has a USB port, makes it easy to synchronize the contacts on the phone from my Mac. I guess I've gotten pretty lucky after reading all the horrible reviews on this phone. I find the menus fairly easy to move thru, and unlike some reader posted you can set the ring to vibrate/ring (vibrates first, then rings). Someone else mentioned lame wallpaper that shipped with the phone - well it's easy to just send yourself a jpg and use that as the wallpaper.

Decent Phone

I've had this phone for a year and am upgrading to a phone that has a camera. For the features it offers - it's a very good phone. The ringer is nice and loud, though the vibrate ringer is not as noticeable as with my other phones. If you get ringers with songs (i.e. actual song not digital reproduction) it's a very clear sound. Hearing the person you're speaking w/can be a challenge sometimes when outdoors - but for the most part that's not a problem.

I don't like that you have to have a separate entry for each # instead of having one entry for a particular friend with all their numbers under that entry. This makes for a lot of scrolling to get #s.

This was the phone I was originally offered. I thought it was cute and at first it worked good. But I text a lot, and while I would text, the phone would shut down, so I'd have to start over. It dropped calls after 15 minutes, sometimes. And I've only had it since September of 2005, so about 5 months, and I already upgraded to a new phone. My husband uses the V188 for work and his V180 for work.. his V180 is actually better and older than my V188, but the V188's earpiece stopped working today. So it has many failures to it.... not a good phone.
