Great hype, not such a good phone...

Mar 15, 2009 by ussintega

When the iPhone first hit the market I was as excited as everyone else, but I know better than to just rush out and pick up something like that on the first shipment. After waiting until I was ready to get it, then all the problems became public and I decided to wait again. Then the 3G hit the market and again I knew better so I waited again, now I've moved on.

I picked up the iPhone 3G and returned it before my 30 days were up. There were so many problems its not even funny, and even now (I do work for AT&T) I still see so much crud pop up its not even funny. I don't recommend this phone to anyone except people who have thousands to spend on it.

Pro's:
Lightweight
sleek
Big Screen
Easy to use
Lots and lots of apps

Con's:
Now to be fair, these are things that not only have I experienced, but I hear on a daily basis.

Flimsy and EASILY breakable
$30 Internet package, no if ands or buts
no picture messaging
no forwarding
No insurance
No resistance
Easily scratchable
bad signal quality
Poor sound quality
Poor volume level
The worst battery life on the market
98% of all applications are useless
Too expensive
Not responsive enough
No horizontal QWERTY keyboard

I eventually said to heck with it and traded my iPhone in for an Samsung Eternity. Though I lose the apps and the full browser it is a better phone by far! Apple made a valiant effort, but they will need a few more years before they can say they have a good phone on their hands. Please consider carefully when thinking about getting the iPhone, in todays world, its not worth the money.

Apple iPhone 3G--don't do it!

Feb 12, 2009 by schralp

If having a “phone” is part of your reason for getting an iPhone, don’t do it—the phone is terrible (rating 1.0). Don’t get me wrong, the iPod portion of this device is great (rating 5.0). 3G speeds for apps and browsing are awful (rating 4.0--not much better out there), email is not true push (rating 2.5 for email--Bberry still rules this category) and the phone is a total POS (calls fail to initiate, dropped calls, poor voice quality and, of course, no dialing without looking at the device because of lack of tactile response or functional voice recognition—which has been widely available in excellent implementation for more than 5 years). If the 3G connectivity approached Wi-Fi speeds and it’s associated functionality, it might be worth it. My opinion is based on 7 months usage (mainly in the LA area but I travel every week for work across the US) and I’ve dumped my contract, returned to Verizon, have an LG-VX8360 clamshell and an expensive, white iPod touch. Save yourself the headache (and money); buy an iPod touch and keep whatever cell phone you’re happy with. This has to be the most over-hyped piece of hardware in history (and I am an all Apple kinda guy). One has to wonder if things would have been different if they really would have released it for all cell networks rather than beholden to one. At least then it would be easier to separate network issues from H/W issues.

Best of luck. You can see the following for a more in-depth account of my experience:

It's an Ipod with a 2 year contract!!!

Sep 8, 2008 by nserrano

1) Several paid apps don't work as it should
2) Crashes more often then a Windows PC. It restarts at least once a day (that I am aware off).
3) I can't really say much about the quality of the calls since I get "called failed" more often then I make calls.
4) I have 5 bars with 3G but still can't check weather, send/receive e-mails, or something as simple as send a text message. Funny how the bars on the phone really don't mean much these days.
5) Last but not least, customer service is horrible. Apple says it's not the phone, AT&T says its not their service. So who's fault is it?!?!? Who is going to fix all the issues?!?!

P.S. AT&T's customer service is still better then Sprint and the touch screen is a great even though I can only use it on the Ipod app and I did not want to sign up for a 2 year contract to have that experience.

So Beautiful...So, So Sad!

I am sorry to say that I am returning my iPhone G3 because of NO SERVICE and DROPPED CALLS. I'm in the heart of NYC and the reception is (at best) awful. Everything in my home is MAC...so, the iPhone was the logical choice. Bad choice. My little Sprint KRZR K1m is running like a tank and has NEVER dropped a call. It works everywhere: elevators, basements on the boat in Key West! It's wonderful for the features it has. BRAVO! BRAVO Sprint!!!

PROS: Design and features offered.

CONS: Dropped calls, Weak signal if any at all. It's a real shame.

Iphone 3g is not a good phone

Aug 29, 2008 by Gosser

First off let me say that the iphone 3G is on the ground floor of amazing technology and it already has fantastic features, however, right now, it is not acceptable. I switched from the Treo 700p with Verizon and this is a very poor 'upgrade'. As a phone, it drops many calls and even when you are connected, the sound quality is awful. I drop calls in midtown Manhattan. I was in Atlanta and couldn't sustain a call for more than 1 minute. I visited an AT&T store to complain and she reset the SIM card. This helped only a little. I am terribly disappointed and will have to turn it in. I think it is just the phone, because my friend has a Treo with AT&T and it isn't bad (not as good as Verizon). What a shame to give it up, but it is unacceptable for business. Treo blows it out of the water. Think twice before getting swept away with the new technology...at least for another 5 years or so....

More problems then the Original

Aug 5, 2008 by wtf im charlie

Without a doubt, the most problems i've ever had with a phone in my entire life. I bought the original iphone on the launch and had very few problems within the year. Waited 5 hours in line for the new Iphone 3g, and have had consistant problems with it since.

Within days the phone was being glitchy. Didn't mind because I thought it would be fixed within a couple weeks since it's a new phone. Then once day, the screen wouldn't come on. I couldn't recieve or respond to call or texts, and i couldn't see anything at all. Brought it to Apple, they reset the phone, and it started working again. Then two or three days later, the same problem happened. I had to cause a complete scene before Apple replaced the phone.

Then I leave two days after getting my replaced to my vacation home in Chelan, Washington and the same problem happened...only there was no apple or at&t store anywhere near here.

Finally, fed up, I called AT&T and told them that i expect for them to return and refund my phone for a new phone. I guess i'll just have to go back to my Blsckberry Curve which i purchased just before the iphone 3G came out.

Screw Apple, i'm completely fed up. My iphone has had consistant problems, and my new macbook harddrive randomly crashed and i lost everything..and had to pay $568 dollars for a new harddrive.

Not for everyone.

I have both had an opportunity to use both the iPhone and iPhone 3G extensively and I can say that the 3G is a nifty toy at best.
A lot of people complain about AT&T's service with the 3G. If you have the chance, sit down in any spot with an 3G and any other AT&T phone turn them on and wait a moment for the phones to pick up a signal. I will guarantee that, unless you live in a very low coverage area, the other phone will have 2 bars better signal 99 times out of 100.
A good friend of mine carries the 3G and I carry an AT&T 3125. He can barely pick up 2 bars while sitting in my living room while I have full bars. It is simply that the 3G has lesser reception strength. To be fair, this is generally true with PDA's and BlackBerries, but not to the same extent as the 3G.
The FireFox app does have a nasty tendency to shut down in mid use and the device itself will restart itself at least once every day or so. And having a non-removable battery definitely causes issues for "power users."
If you live in a great signal area, like playing with various apps, and do not rely on your phone as a lifeline or for business phone, then this is a great phone to have. But, if you rely heavily on your phone, absolutely depend on your phone, live in a less than superior coverage area, or are a business user, this phone is absolutely not for you and will cause nothing but headaches.
Finally, if you are within your 30-day Buyers Remorse period, I would strongly recommend returning the device. The store reps will try to convince you that things will get better, or a new tower is going up soon. Do not fall for this, they are trying to protect their commission. If you are having issues already, RETURN IT. You will save yourself a lot of time, effort and headache. Due to the Apple-AT&T agreement, there is little that can be dome for you between the Buyers Remorse period and your actual upgrade date.
The bottom line: Know what you're getting into. This phone is not for everyone.

Nice toy, bad phone, but no voice dialing?

Mar 24, 2009 by JustBelowAverage

As a toy this is a nice device, responsive, good display and some there as some nice apps available, however this is one of the worst phones I have ever had and that is the most important part of a business cell phone.

Poor reception, dropped calls, and complaint after complaint from people on the other end about the voice quality. Everyone says my sound choppy and there is excessive background noise. And no voice dialing? What is that about, voice dialing is essential for the business user who lives in his car.

Pros:
- Responsive
- Nice browser

Cons:
- Poor reception
- Poor sound
- No voice dialing
- No voice dialing

Iphone Sucks

Oct 22, 2008 by will I am1980

I wanted the iphone for so long and finally decided to go purchase one. I got home only to realize that my signal was non-existant..Maybe I could have dealt with this as everywhere else it was ok not great just ok and I was in love with the looks of the phone. However, it then started freezing up on me every few minutes..kicking me off the internet back to the apps screen. Not acceptible.
