Treo Centro is good overall but........

Oct 31, 2007 by infinitenbm

I recently purchased the Centro, it is my 3rd different kind of Treo that I have owned. Despite the fact that it's pretty much the same as the others, the fact that it's lighter is a HUGE upgrade for me. I must admit the stylus is not that great but that doesn't have anything to do with the way the phone works. I don't know if I got a bad Treo or not, but my phone constantly resets when I try to check text messages & my email doesn't work as good as it did on my other Treos. (not saying it's the phones fault either) I also noticed the phone will start logging on the internet for no apparent reason? I guess the only thing I really don't "like" is the memory card slot is not nearly as accessible as the other Treos that I've owned. I am going to take this phone back & exchange it for another Centro because I like the phone so much I am going to stick with it. GOOD JOB TREO.

Palm still doesn't get phones

Oct 20, 2007 by palmuser95030

I love the palm operating system and was excited to see a new real size phone from palm. Palm still doesn't get it with what real phone users want. My phone was unreliable and whenever I called support it was "Oh - you didn't buy a Treo - well I can't help you; we haven't been trained yet.

One example, I turned the phone off and then tried to turn it back on and it wouldn't come back on. So a call to support. Oh, it's not a Treo, just bang on the battery a couple of times and this should fix the problem. Unfortunately, it did. Bad design! I returned the phone.

Fast, Furious, and..............Flimsy

Oct 18, 2007 by agreenejr

When I first purchased the Centro two days ago I was surprised at how small it is. Extremely small for a Palm device. I felt that the engineers at Palm are finally catching up with Blackberry. When I started navigating the menus it hit me, its basically the same operating system. Will Palm ever make it out of the 90's, Who Knows? I really liked my old 700p so I tried to forget about the lack OS evolution. As I tinkered on with the phone I stumbled on a design flaw that is almost unforgivable. Unlike the Treo or any Blackberry for that matter, the Centro is super flimsy. Its design flaws may also effect other aspects of the phone during normal use and storage. Let me explain, some Palm owners including myself like to carry and use an extra battery. The battery cover is vary thin and hard to open and close. I feel that the tiny hooks that secure the cover will quickly ware out if I open and close it two or three times a day. Additionally when the phone was released both Palm and Sprint forgot to release a carrying accessory like an case or a holster. I was forced to carry the device in my front pocket. During normal activities with the phone in my pocket the poor construction of the phone became more apparent. When the slightest pressure was put on the phone due to bending, standing or kneeling the seated Micro SD card would dislodge causing a loud beep. After about the fourth or fifth beep it got very annoying. I exchanged the first phone only to experience the same problem with the second. I like this phone so Ill just have to carry it with out the SD card.

PROs

1. Fast Internet and program launch.
2. Small size Large features
3. Wow, I don't have to read the owners Manuel (same OS)
4. Great Keyboard

CONs

1. Flimsy design
2. Micro SD card slot design flaws
3. Same OS
4. No accessories at the time of launch
5. I don't even want to think about what might happen if you drop it from from ear or even pocket height

Treo 650, I mean Centro review.

Jan 1, 2008 by the2ndflood

I like the Treo Centro. It runs on the very dependable Sprint CDMA/EV-DO network. But it is the same phone as the Treo 600 that came out back in 2003. Palm decided that since the 600 was such a big success, that they had no need to make any kind of effort in designing a new phone. This holds true with the Centro. This phone has the (((SAME))) hardware as the Treo 600, 650, 700, 750, ect. Just a bit more memory and a so-called updated OS. The OS might have an update number of 5.4.9, but there is zero difference in the OS. I can not tell a difference at all. This is sad seeing as they made a Lunix based OS called Cobalt years ago and it has never seen the light of day. The Centro still has the same bugs as every Treo since the 600. Start-up time is very slow. Which is really bad when you are in need of making an important phone call, and the phone resets for no reason. Making you wait up to 60+ seconds for it to come back online. The limited RAM of 64MB's, is so much lower then most PDA's currently on the market. You can use ZLaucher to transfer programs to a memory card, but this can not be done with all software. And since the web browser uses RAM, not memory cards, you still only have 8MB's to work with in Blazer. All software must be loaded into RAM before being it can run, So prepare for the phone to reset at least once a day to get the those limited RAM resources back.
Still no WiFi, which was the complaint in 2003 and Palm has not added it yet. The Centro still has the same 312 MHz Intel XScale processor. Signal strength is still pretty strong, but voice quality is still not great when compared to every other phone I have used before.
So if you loved the Treo 650, you will love the Centro, BECAUSE IT IS THE SAME PHONE!

Do Not Buy! Beware!

This phone is poorly built hardware. Four days after purchasing the phone, it crashed itself while tring to shutdown due to a low battery (even though the charger was attached) and it seemed to short circuit only to never operate again. Sprint looked at it and offered me a new one, but I returned it instead. It sounded like another reviewer had something similar happen to theirs as well.

This seemed like a suitable end for the phone with the hands down shortest battery life ever! Before buying, I had read the complaints about battery life but I never suspected that even modest use would drain the battery in less than a day. By 5 or 6pm I would run out of power, and I had only used it as a phone with no conversation longer than 20 min (no web use, mp3's etc). VERY VERY SHORT BATTERY LIFE.

PROS:
Lot of features, small size, and low price to sucker in buyers.

CONS:
flimsy, low quality, and unusable battery life.

Palm Centro: the only smartphone that isn't smart

Since there is no room to really say anything about a phone with the space provided here, I've posted the full review on my funblog at http://stinkywap.funformobile.com. Just click on Journal on the top.

Centro’s pros and cons breakdown:

- Piss poor pathetic ridiculous battery life that is an embarrassment to Palm.
- The necessity of an extended life battery practically cancels out the cheaper price.
- GPS is completely useless unless you need to call 911 without speaking to the operator. It doesn't work Sprint Navigation and I couldn't find any apps that work with it.
- It’s extremely difficult, if at all possible, to get any kind of applications or games onto it. You pretty much are stuck with what’s pre-installed on it.
- Bland, boring interface.
- Touch screen is unresponsive. You’ll end up just using the directional button.
- Mediocre camera is like the ones found on free phones only worse.
- Keys so tiny they actually become a conversation piece when people around you see your phone.
- It doesn’t notify you of new email on the screen like Windows Mobile phones do so you have to keep manually checking it if you want to know if you got any.
+ It looks nice.
+ It’s relatively inexpensive although the necessity for an extended life battery makes it more expensive so the value of its price depends on how cheap you can get a new battery.
+ Good signal and OS performance. Everything loaded up fast and never slowed down or froze.
+ Email client worked great and was amazingly easy to set up and took just a few seconds.

Bottom Line: Get the new Motorola Q9c and buy this for your girlfriend or teenager.

ooohhhhhh!

idk why people always go on and on about how this phone's battery sucks, and it hard-resets itself. This is the second day I've had it, and it's just amazing. It also solves my problem of having to carry around a phone AND a pocket PC. Here are some pros/ cons

Pros:
*Touch screen
*QWERTY keyboard
*manage different apps at same time
*cool ring tones
*Mega-fast internet

Cons:
*the stylus feels like it will break in two seconds of use.
*Weird charger.....

Also, idk what people are saying about how you have to take off the battery cover to get to the memory card, cuz right below the IR beam thing on the right of the phone, there's a tab that you can pull out to get to the memory card. so..... yeah, thats about it. great phone!

No data plan required....

Feb 22, 2009 by mellowlen62

Pros:
Small size, nice appearance (not a brick)
Keypad is tiny but surprisingly accurate
Threaded Text Messaging
Customizable
Palm just makes sense (user friendly)
Verizon network (sounds like a landline)
No data plan necessary
Cons:
Camera could be better
Battery life just Ok, but that's typical with this type of phone, so not a major con
Bottom Line:
Just does exactly what I need it to when I need it to. I need more than a phone but less than a laptop and this meets my needs and expectations. The internet is there if I need it without being forced to pay $30 for data I don't often use.

My expierences with the Palm Centro

Dec 10, 2008 by cbeckner

This phone sucks. There I said it. I have had my Palm Centro for a little over 8 months now and I am on my third one. And I am having problems with this one too. The service is great, but the phone functionality is very poor. This phone freezes, resets, and deletes messages all on its own, and vibrates for no reason. I have problems getting my email to work on it as well. This phone has some neat features, but does not compare to the hassle it brings with it. The keyboard is very small, which wouldn't be such an issue if this device came with predictive text. Granted, there are alot of neat applications you can download for your Palm device, again, the features do not compare to the hassles I have encountered with this phone. When this phone resets itself (for no reason), it takes forever for it to load. The screen does not have the best response time when touched. There is no flash or light for the camera, no GPS on this phone, and when dropped it all comes apart. The battery cover is cheap. I'm afraid if I sneeze too hard while talking on it, it will just fall apart. You have to take the battery cover off to put a memory card in the phone which is very annoying. I enjoyed this phone somewhat when I first got it, but that was the first one. The second one didn't last long until I had programming issues on it as well. (less than 2 months) Now I am on my third one, and it too is starting to have the same issues. It's very frustrating to go thru the hassles to have it replaced, only to have it happen again, and yet again. Prior to this phone I had a Sanyo 8300 which I had for 2 years and I loved it. It was unbreakable! I never got tired of that phone, it was just a little beat up. So I replaced it with the Centro. I grew tired of it only after a few weeks. Buyer be ware!

L0VE iiT!

Jun 6, 2008 by Pink_centro08

I have the pink centro...and this is my first pda coming from the samsung a800...sanyo...fusic...pink muziq....rumor...red centro to the PINK CENTRO!...I L0VE THiS phone! Its awsome, its fast, the customization is awsome if you have the butterfly proqram instead of using the phonesz theme. I think ITS 10x better than the IPHONE, and i would never go to the iphone because you can't have your own ringtonesz...BS...and i don't like just a touch screen phone. The keyboard is awsome..ill never go without a phone that doesn't have a keyboard, which most likely i won't LIKE the instinct. LAME PHONE!...They need to come out with like a fulltouch screen phone and a slideout keyboard...so this phone is what basically keeps me with sprint, because there CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS!... GET THIS PHONE IN PINK IF YOUR A GIRL!...I loveee it!! The text messaqinq, the internet is fast....AhHH!!
