a great phone after de-branded

Mar 1, 2009 by mingkee

this one is 2nd unit
though I liked the first unit, some quirk made me not happy
but the second unit (fw version 5.20, and de-branded) is a lot better
reception remains the same, still needs 3 bars to maintain decent speed, but 3G icon is there*, as well as E icon*
I don't have earpiece problem as other mentioned, it's loud and clear, though I use bt headset most of the time, and I can even play music over it (poor quality as expected)
the cam is just kinda basic
external music player control is a good plus, that I can control audio player or FM radio without opening flip
web browser is pretty on the low side, it even can't open mobile youtube
battery is fine, but you can force 2G* to save battery
USB connection adds connection ease, but one thing I am not happy is, you can't set which default mode, that it may be a hassle if you want to tether over USB
the headset jack is 2.5mm, you can use regular 2.5mm to 3.5mm headphones adapter, the music quality is good
memory card support, even with 5.20 version, it still limits the max supported capacity to 4GB (it only shows 4GB even you put in higher)
now this phone is $30 partial upgrade, if you know how to de-brand it, it's a good steal for the price

*after de-branded, you have to use configurator to make it work with T-Mobile data again

Good Companion

This will be short and to the point.

Pros
- Durable, phone has been dropped and still works just like new
-Loud vibrate setting
-Clear music and ring tones
-Camera is good for 1+ mega-pixels
-Calendar, alarm, to do list are all easy to use
-Signal is as good as can be expected (small town but rarely drops calls)
-Text messaging is easy and quick
-Customizable shortcuts are a big plus
-Cheap paint over the chrome wears off (purely cosmetic issue)

Cons
-As mentioned before, rarely drops calls
-Soft buzzing in the background of all calls (able to get used to it after a week or so)
-PC sync was a little difficult to figure out
-Transferring music can be a pain sometimes but it is possible

I have really enjoyed this phone because it gave me few problems and the ones I did encounter ended up being caused by the network. A solid choice for a phone but do not expect to conquer the business world with it.
