Sams's review of the Motorola Droid Mini

original version, submitted Dec 26, 2013, 4:30 PM:

Nearly perfect!

I am thrilled with this phone! I thought, well, it’s just a plain upgrade, but Oh boy, it rocks!

I am upgrading from my Droid 4 (D4). To be honest, I really miss the physical keyboard. But with so many good available keyboards in the play store + swype + speech to text, I manage my way around pretty well. I also hate the slippery back of the phone, full of finger prints. I also miss the removable SD card, and the Mini is available with 16gb only. You do get 50 gb online storage free for 2 years, but data charges applies.

But that’s all I have to complaint. Otherwise I enjoy everything on this phone. The size is just perfect, feels as comfy in your hand as an iPhone, who needs bigger?

Everything is improved from my Droid 4 – which was not bad at all to begin with. Screen resolution is fantastic (720p over qHD on D4, that's 342 ppi vs. 275!). Size of phone is smaller in all dimensions, but the screen is bigger, and battery lasts much longer, a full day of 14-15 hours!

The power and volume keys are excellent & much better than my D4 and among the best I ever tried. Screen color is also so much better than D4 and colors are true to life, no need for the AMOLED oversaturated screens. It’s a bit odd with polarized glasses though.

This thing is blazing FAST! Smooth and super responsive. Can’t think of why you would need a faster processor. Probably 5x gaster than my D4. Camera is also so much better than my D4 (and activates by shaking the phone). Sound thru speakers can’t match HTC One, but is loud & clear. Would love stereo, though.

This phone is packed with tech, which I wonder how it all fits in this little sleek phone. 'OK Google now' answers all your questions; driving /sleeping mode, migrate & zap, and much more. So many sensors working for you quietly and fast. I keep getting surprises every day!

I got Android 2.2 out of the box, lots of options compared to 2.1 from my D4. It’s supposed to be upgraded to 4.4 KitKat soon.

I got Android 2.2 out of the box, already upgraded to 4.4 KitKat.

Edit: Battery life is really a disappointment. after 3 months, the battery barely last for 3-4 hours, w/o much use. Disappointing!
