...this.

I like Sanyo, I really do. I had an 8300 for several months and it was a great phone. Ugly, sure. Lacking key features I have since taken for granted? Yes. But a a phone it was great.

This looks to be the same sort of situation, except with some features that finally bring Sanyo phones firmly into 2005.

Why the same aesthetics, though? Christ, that keypad so damn ugly. Would it have taken that much more money to invest in a better keypad, or a better screen?

Sanyo's clearly been passed up by other manufacturers...

Sayno has won the J.D. powers and association award 3 years in a row for the best cell phone manufactor out there, period. And that was based on every cell phone manufactor out there, including your fad phones like the 8600. So I don't think anyone can possibly say that other manufactors have passed Sanyo.

Well, I think what muchdrama may be addressing is that Sanyo in the last couple years has become pretty bland. IMO the Katana is the most innovative handset since the VM4500, which was the first video phone I had ever heard of. I'm not sure if it was in fact the first but, simply the first I had found when it was released. And, still...Sanyo chose NOT to make the Katana EVDO and gave it a 16-bit screen! I was blown away! Although I don't have a Sanyo right now, I've always been a huge fan. IMO they're still the best when it comes to reception in California - which could be attributed to the external/extendable attenae that Sanyo stubbornly continues to produce. But, the reality is...people are becoming bored of Sanyo's recycled form factor. ...

I am with you. I love sanyo phones but they need to step it up a few notches. This phone looks pretty good feature-wise but the appearance is off. I am no designer but I am the customer and if they are pleasing me I'm not buying their phone. It's not the worst looking phone I've ever seen. I still am a little disappointed in my phones appearance (a920) but I'm over it. It works great and I'm sure this phone does, too. I just wish they had the looks to go with it.

Some of you folks need to learn to spell a little. It is manufacturer not manufactor. I don't even remember what the other abomination was but there is a spell checker on here, so take advantage of it and don't blame it on English not being your primary language. I can'...

I can't believe for one second that anyone is comparing this phone to ANY audiovox phone. I can tell you first hand that audiovox phones are junk. Whenever sprint carried an audiovox product (including the vaunted 6600) we dealt with no end of problems - service issues, repair issues - the phones just carry that 'junk' air about them. Most of them look like plastic toys. You may not care for the 8400 but please don't compare sanyo to audiovox. Heck, I'd take a sanyo 200 over any audiovox offering any day!! 🙄

Why would I compare a brand new phone to a three year old POS such as the audiovox 8600? It is clear that I meant the LG Chocolate 8600, another phone that is launching simultaneously on Verizon. Look at the two phones and see an incredibly disappointing difference.

The chocolate slider for verizon seems like a POS, yes. The 8600 is a different phone that has not even been released yet. No one knows if it is a similar POS or not, especially not you.

Regardless - it will drive traffic to Verizon because it is sexy. The 8400 is not. Sanyo phones are great - I've had a few and I loved them. But sexy they ain't. It's ugly. And why should I have to settle for an ugly phone when I can get a sexy one, probably for cheaper? These are the problems with Sprint.

I was referring to Sanyo's physical design sense...they've been relying on essentially the same design (except for the Katana) for quite a while now. So, in that sense...they've clearly been passed up. JD Powers...whatever.

By far Sanyo makes the best phones no arguing however I think most would agree this phone is ugly. The plastic looks really cheap and the keypad is awful.

I keep saying this but Honda cars were ugly as freakin' sin for years, but you know what? People kept buying them! Same situation here.
