6102i/6103 Reliability?

Lateralus

So, the old model 6101/6102 this phone replaces is notorious for at least two major problems.

First, it has low/inconsistent earpiece volume. I've experienced it first-hand as I got to use someone's 6102. Let me tell you it's terrible. Even at the highest volume, this tri-band phone would sound okay to totally inaudible. The lowest volume setting sounded just about as bad as the highest. I'm in the middle of downtown, no problem with coverage. My 4 year old single-band candybar Nokia sounds a lot louder and clearer. Couldn't have been more disappointed. The earpiece volume has been fixed. The menus, however, are ver slow. I would say maybe a bit slower than the 6101. The rubberized exterior would seem to protect it more than the 6101 so breakage would be less of an issue. I have dropped mine and it works just fine.

Thanks for the response. It's good to know the volume is fixed. I saw your review though, and I thought you originally said the menus are faster than the 6101?

Just got the 6103 and am impressed with the things that Nokia fixed from the 6101: earpiece volume excellent, faster menus and a rubberized finish to grip the phone.

About the screens, I think it was more of an issue regarding the reliability of the LCD screens themselves, not really the shell being less protective. It seems even people who handled their 6101s with kid gloves had leaking/spotty/broken screens. But I wouldn't know. It's good to know the new one can take a drop and still be good as new. That's what I expect out of a Nokia. 😁
