Why is this? I bought a nice set of ear phones and would like to use them for both but now I need an adapter.

2.5mm jack is standard on cell phones, you can get an adapter at radio shack

I HAVE an adpter and the stupid thing doesn't fit! I don't care if other smartphones have them. It's a stupid, arrogant oversight and a hassle that the designers of the iPod nano were smart enough to avoid.

uh, MOTOROLA was not trying to make another iPOD, they were making a CELLPHONE. So it makes sense that their headset jack is compatible with CELLPHONES as those types of handsfree units are what people would expect to use with them.

BTW, there are cheap adapters on Ebay that supposedly turn the mini-USB to a 3.5MM for your earphones. I ordered one and will let you know if it works. The problem with this though, is of course you can't charge and listen at the same time.

sorry, forgot to follow up - YES if you get the one that works with the RAZR it works.

Also, I don't know if I mentioned it before, but the VZW corporate store had a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter for $20 that has the call answer button & volume control inline. My wife settled on this because she can charge while using the 3.5.

Radio Shack must be making a killing off of people like us purchasing adapters that don't work! I just did the same thing.

The Motorola bluetooth stereo headphones aren't an option for me and I'd like to find a way to use my current earbuds too. Another poster talked about a USB to stereo headphone adapter is was waiting for delivery from Amazon; maybe that's an option.

If you noticed on the package it probably said mono, and looked at the adapter there is only 2 contacts. I have a stereo adapter that works for the v710, but have not found it to try on my Q

I purchased a 2.5mm stereo adapter (three distinct rings on the plug, instead of the mono two). The one I purchased still won't work on the Q. It looks to me like something's non-standard with the phone plug, or perhaps it's built with accommodating the cellular products in mind.

So this phone is supposed to double as an MP3 player but you only get sound to one side??

You get sound to one side if you use a regular phone handsfree which commonly has only one earbud.

Motorola DOES make a stereo phone handsfree:
"Motorola Q Original One Touch Stereo Handsfree Headset CHYN4516 Details:
This Motorola original stereo headset includes a one-touch answer end button making it easy to accept and end phone calls with compatible motorola phones. One touch button may not be compatible with all phones. Check owners manual for one touch compatibility. "

Alternately you can search ebay for 2.5mm to 3.5mm STEREO adapter - I just ordered one for $9 shipped.

No thanks, that Motorola stereo USB headset is $30 @ Best Buy - you can get them shipped for half that amount from eBay.

The only advantage w/ getting this from Best Buy is if you wanted something right away and didn't care about using your own headphones or outputting to another audio device (like your car or other speakers).

I got this one http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=PPCP ADPT01 , but it only worked after I rewired it and I never got the call answer button to work. It was about 2 years ago (purchased for the v710) and I glued the adapter shut so I am not sure which go to which. On the same order my friend got this one http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=1084 27 and it worked fine without rewiring. I guess if it is compatible with the Motorola MPx200 you should be safe.
I tested Mine on the Q and it seems Like there is some audio processing, cause My set file worked, but when the left or right channels come on there is still a little sound in the opposite side.

good luck

I just tested it with my Skullcandy Link: Jacked and it works great. The Jacked product lets you use any headphone/speaker w/ 3.5". There are 2 inputs one 3.5" for your mp3 player and 2.5" for your phone (Q works on this). Stereo works w/ this headphone setup and the Multifunction button on the unit actually activates the voice command for dialing! Volume through the 2.5 is constant though, which is ok because that means you can still use the jog dial on the Q to control volume.

At first it sounded really bad, but I realized the crappy audio quality was a side-effect of the simulated "surround" setting on the Q - accessories - "audio enhancement". I turned that down all the way ...

A standard 2.5mm to 3.5mm stereo adapter will not work. The jack on the Q has three inputs, left and right audio, and microphone. Although it can't be found on Motorola's website, they do make an adapter. Search for this part number and you will find many resellers online (SKN6183).

The Q has the same standard 2.5mm jack as all cell phones.

2.5mm is the standard for phones, and the standard for headsets (one speaker and one microphone, for making phone calls).

3.5mm is the standard for music devices, and the standard for stereo headphones (two speakers and no microphone, for listening to music).

In these days of phones that play music, 2.5mm jacks with an extra pin to support stereo music are most common. There are two reasons for this. First, these devices are still primarily phones; music is a secondary feature. Second, 2.5mm jacks are obviously smaller, and that's crucial when trying to make the phone as small as possible.

The only problem is it only plays in mono. One ear is all you get.
