Charging via USB?

Can the Q be charged via USB plugged into a computer? When I plug mine into my computer, I'll occasionally see the "plugged in" indicator, but the battery dies! The unit charges correctly when I use the AC->mini USB cable, but not when I plug the USB into a USB socket on my computer. Is this expected?

try taking the battery out while you have it plugged into your computer. I don't think a cable can increase the output from a USB port. You are probably fortunate to have a port that supplies enough power.

page 12 of the manual states "If your battery is drained, it cannot be charged via USB...USB will only maintain current battery life"

Thats a crock! I frustrated myself today too at work trying to charge the Q from my mini USB and I walk away an hour later with no extra charge! So basically it just powers the device not charges it. That quote "maintain current battery life" means nothing. It means it doesnt touch the battery, period.

Just another way to milk more moeny from the customers to buy more accessories. My first USB device that doesnt charge on USB.

I even tried charging it from my Car cigarette lighter charger for the blackberry.

Bro, The USB cable is made to transfer data not charge your phone. It maintains a charge while using USB. What phone out there can use a USB cable to charge a Dead Batt?? That's why it comes with a Wall charger!! And just because the same cable fits from you BB do not assume that it will charge the next device with the same port. Quit being a baby and go by a Motorola car charger for $15.

In response too:
"What phone out there can use a USB cable to charge a Dead Batt?? "

In case you havenet bought any devices recently, most portable devices these days do both Charge and Sync on a USB cable. My old Moto E815 did, All the recent Blackberrys do (yes they are phones too). My iPod charges from a USB cable, my Dell Axim Pocket PC charges from a usb cable, my list goes on and on.

And its not so much the fact that I need to buy additional chargers, but who wants to carry them all around and fill up every outlet and port? I have enough clutter on my desk and enough clutter in my backpack.

I totally agree with what your saying but I will tell you that some type of charging does happen via USB since my bat was DEAD yestday since I didn't charge it the night before. so I plugged it in via USB with the phone off and guess what the charging animation came up on the screen. after about an hour I turned the phone on and I had life again. only about a 1/4 charge but still a charge I left the phone plugged in with the phone on the rest of the day and when I went home the phone was fine for the hour commute home.

so in a way the USB cable can charge the phone I just think the phone has to be off, maybe WM5 is just too energy hungry for the USB ports

You all must have cheap no-name laptops or desktops (non-tier 1 equipment), I have a HP Pavilion zv5000, Acer 3200 Ferrari, Dell Precision A450 desktop. I have no problems with any of my computers charging my Q and I use the desktop charger and supplied USB cable. My battery was almost dead today, my Q giving me low battery alerts. Put it in the desktop charger and 2-3 hours later it is fully charged, full bars. The desktop charger does not come with a USB cable, or a AC charger adaptor. It is just an add-on to what comes with your boxed Motorola Q. I should also add that the desktop charger is passive, my Q charges the same via USB cable with or with out the desktop charger station.

Some instructions from the manual of the desktop char...

I swear these threads get recycled with the same questions. I posted in a similar thread a couple weeks ago that there does exist a cable that has 2 usb ports and ends in a mini-usb that plugs into your Q. This means that it's getting power from 2 USB ports!

This is what I've given my wife when she wants the Q to connect to her laptop for syncing while charging simultaneously.

These cables are easy to find bundled with a 2.5" aluminum USB hard drive enclosure on Ebay for as low as $15 shipped. Here is a link to one I'm referring to and if you look at the picture you'll see the coiled USB cable with a mini-usb and 2 USB (a) ports : http://cgi.ebay.com/XtraStor-USB-2-0-2-5-Hard -Drive-Enclosure-Aluminum-NEW_W0QQitemZ170002 984990QQihZ007Q...
