do we have to pay $5?

I just ordered this phone mainly for the voice recognition and bluetooth. I know several people who have the speaker-independent voice recognition who love it. Sprint wants to charge and extra 5 bucks to use an internal feature built right into the phone! They are 5 bucking me here and there to use most features of this phone. That is too bad. Does anyone know of a way around this?

no you do not have to, the old voice recognition system sprint offers was just for older phones that did NOT have these newer voice functions. so no, you dont need it. just hold down the speaker button and it asks you what you want to do. ex. call tom, call 718-555-5555,

Yea I thought so too. The guy at the Sprint Website was blown away as well. He checked with his supervisor and sure enough after the first month there will be a $ 5 charge.
go to this link http://www1.sprintpcs.com/explore/ueContent.j sp?scTopic=pcsVoiceCommand
then click on flash demo and it says right there and we are talking about the 940. Do you have this phone? and what do you think? Mine should be here on Monday. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I saw a thread last night where 3 people have already returned it because of the swivel. Do you have to use the swivel to take a pic?
Thanks for you insight,
Marilyn

thanks so much for the info. I had read alot of reviews from a guy that worked at a sprint store and people were having him do alot of different things to see if it would work. It seems that people are a bit worried about the swivel making the phone loosen over time. I guess I will swivel it a bunch over the first 14 days (warranty) to see. I am excited! I had the ericcson t610 through tmobile. I have a little sticker shocked at all the things you have to add to get the most out of the phone i.e. mobile vision and such. I had 3k min for $49 now I am about $170 for 2500 after I add all the options and pkgs. I should get it tomorrow. I will let ya know. I can't wait I am such a gadget freak.

I dont forsee a problem with the swivel I have had a 610 for 3 years and not had any problems with the swivel comming to loose on me it is still decently tight and i played with it all the time swiveling it back and fourth at work. It would always catch peoples attn when I did that.. the swivel is a hell of a lot tighter than on my 610 I was extremly happy with my 970 for the week that i had it i am now going to sprint for the 940... For whoever gets this I really doubt you will be disapointed with the phone assuming its the clone of the 970 of which i had... A hundred times better than the 610 in my opinion..

I'm pretty sure you don't get charged for using the features on the phone. I thought the $5 was if you used something on the sprint network to use voice dial. And no the swivel doesn't have to be used to take a pic but it sure makes it easier to see what you are doing since the lens is on the side of the phone.

No, you do not have to pay the $5. That $5 is for a service called voice command for cell phones that do not have voice recognition at all, or for limited recognition. The A940 has acutal voice recognition software built into the phone that works great. I work for Sprint and I have played with this phone a great deal over the past few days and I love it by the way. Also, you can dictate a SMS text message via the vocie recognition software as well. I will be purchasing this phone and putting it on my personal account very soon!

The $5 is not for the voice dial built into the phone. The $5 is for Voice Command which is a voice feature on the Sprint network similar to the voice dial on the phone. The main difference is that Voice Command uses phonetics to recognize words. The voice dial on the phone recognizes your voice. If you have a cold or lose your voice one day, the phone feature (voice dial) may not work, but Voice Command will always recognize the phonetics of the words (unless you have a very thick accent). Both work pretty well, it just depends on your preference. Hope that helps.

Correction, the A940 recognizes your request based on phonetics as well. You do not have to train your voice on that phone. That main difference is that you organize and store you contacts for voice command service online through spints website. That way, if you ever lose your phone or it won't power on, you have your contacts still.

Its a good idea for some people with massive phone books.

Thanks to all that replied. I just found that out through the sprint rep. I got my phone yesterday but it won't be activated until tomorrow since tmobile is holding my number hostage one more day. They also that you would have to enter you phone contacts in manually without the sprint service. It will recognize anyone's voice after it is in there. With the service you can enter it in verbally or on the web.

No, the $5/month option is for a network-based voice dialing system that is completely separate from the voice dialing feature built in to the phone.
