That's what I don't get: why does T-Mobile want a phone that can use UMTS when it isn't even close to having a UMTS network? Why isn't Cingular getting the Nokia equivalent of the RAZR?

Or is TM getting a slightly crippled version, with no UMTS? Or are they going to have a roaming agreement w/Cingular? Or is TM going to suddenly grow a UMTS network overnight?

Basically because the phone doesn't operate on the 850 frequency which is a LARGE part of Cingular's network. Since Cingular eats the cost of roaming (instead of charging their customers the way most carriers do) they could potentially lose a lot of money on this device.

That being said, it isn't even an issue if you have an unlocked phone.

T-Mobile ver having UMTS disabled
unlocked, but unable to roam in 850 area (also can't use with Cingular in 850 area)
