DUN After Update

askop

Can anyone who has had the software update on their phone confirm that you can still use your phone as a modem?

That is, Menu 000000, 4, 5 Enable is still an option?

Please let me know before I do the deed...

Don't do it. The upgrade identifies your phone as a handset and blocks it from connecting. DUN will work to another ISP but NOT VERI-ZONED. I wish I could go back to version 1!

Even though we in Seattle haven't gotten the upgrade yet I heard that would happen from VZW techies. Too many folks were leaching off the phone for broadband apparently. Sucks really since I told them I did about a gig of transfers using the mobile web interface on the phone itself so how would they know if I only just changed my interface from phone to laptop and why should it matter? 🙂 Didn't fly... so hopefully there will be a hack at sometime... ☹️

Good luck and we'll be watching. I have an iPAQ PDA that I used to be able to use the DUN with a data cable on another phone. Now I have a 8100 and I am trying to get it to work with my Bluetooth. Not having any luck yet. The two devices see each other but something is not working. I have worked with a person named Sawdust all day today he/she has been great but I can't figure it out. We have had a lot of posts today. Look back to the next page for BLUETOOTH AND iPAQ. Maybe that will help you. Good luck and let me know how you do.

Arkady2k,
I'm am told it can be done by someone that really really knows about the phone as a hacker. That is too scary and too much work. If the phone breaks and it has been hacked I'm out of luck with any Verizon guys. No way will they take care of me! I worked for about three hours with a Verizon data guy person to person in his office and he could not make it happen. He was a good guy and he was trying everything for both Verizon net and other ISPs. No luck. I took my 8100 back yesterday. I am really really disappointed with Verizon. I have been with them for years and years but today I switched to a Treo from Cingular. I'm sad to go but I have no choice this is for work not play and I need to be able to get the job done. I waited month...

thanks Lax,

I can't leave verizon cause I have 2 year contract and the only thing I regret doing is updating the firmware on this phone... everything was working so well before the update. I feel a lot worse about doing this upgrate then getting a speeding ticket.

I know a lot of providers offer free hours, (anywhere from 10-20 hrs per month) of dial up networking because they realize their customers will not be at their homes all the time and have a laptops. I have COX Cable and I know that they do. You may not be able to use VZW network any longer but you can use your cable/dsl provider's network.

I used the USB Cable to connect to the internet using DUN. i double click on my connection on my desktop, I notice on the phone it says "data call" then after connected and usr/pass are verified. on the phone the screen show little Tx and Rx bars. computer says connects at 115K

And yes I have the latest software update.

Okay... maybe I'm a little dense here or confused but if you use essentially "dialup" with your provider/ISP, then aren't you going through a modem bank and then stuck at modem speeds of V.90-ish (i.e., 48-52kbps typically). If not, how do you get on the network otherwise? Or is this more like a POP gateway?

Dial Up Networking. It allows you to surf the internet on a computer using the Phone as a Modem.
