What is Standalone Mode? Anyone?

There is a setting on the phone called "Standalone Mode". It's referenced on p. 45 of the manual, but the explanation does not make sense to me. Can anyone here clarify?

On the phone menu, go to Settings & Tools, then. #4 System, then #1 Standalone Mode. It's either on or off. It was set to off when I got my phone.

Thanks.

Its used so you can still use your phones features and such when you don't want the service and radio waves (on planes).

do you mean if I turn standalone on, it disables the "phone" features?

Correct, its allows for the phone to operate everything that doesn't require the actual service (games, etc.)
