My review of the 8100 (some e815 info)

Well, I must say I have been won over by this phone. I have never been a fan of LG in the past but this phone is a new beast. The phone has a great look, a great feel, and great features. No more is the LG the bulky, boxy, flimsy feeling, cracker jacks box phone I used to consider it. I bought the Motorola e815 just yesterday but upon seeing this phone I had to switch. The e815 did have some advantages such as a more versatile speakerphone, better looking menus and a bigger screen but not enough advantages to make it a better choice. That is saying a lot since I am a moto lover...well the older ones anyway...not the flimsy tinker toys they have been putting out lately. I pretty much worshipped my Moto V300.

PROS:

Build - The VX8100 ha...

I agree with everything you said. just to add to the discussion.. Here's my rant on the E815 that i posted over on HOFO, for people to read here on pscoop...

I had the E815, and I returned it for the VX8100.

The E815 was a good phone. The Extra cash you talk about is only a measly 50 bucks (different story I suppose if you're buying them full retail). The E815 had some good qualities, but I had several things that bothered me about the phone. Lets see if I can remember most of them...

1. speakerphone would sporadically have the echoing problem. VERY annoying and embarrassing. and the person on the receiving end would instantly complain about it, and it made it seem as though my phone sucked or something.
2. the external display i...

I agree with you also. As far as the e815 goes I had the same problems with low speaker volume but did like that it could work with the phone closed. I also had the same issues with the vibrate mode and camera. I never got the echo effect on the speakerphone though. The front display was a complete joke. My screensaver of the Enterprise looked like a fuzzy grey dinner plate with a clock in the middle of it. I love that the front clock can be minimized on the VX8100. I have a cool Alex Ross Superman image on it now (thought the blue face lent itself to being a superman themed phone). I am a little more generous than you to the e815 in that I would give it a 6.5 out of 10. If moto had streamlined the body, improved the plasticy feel, and put a...

yeah, the e815's ability to work as a phone with the flip closed was defintiely something I loved about it. I could make a call, talk, as well as answer calls, all with the flip closed. but eh... it's ok. that one pro wasn't worth all the cons on the e815 compared with the vx8100.

that's the thing about trying to choose between all the phones out today. there's no one perfect phone. they all have their pros and cons.

it's about choosing which has more pros than cons, or down to straight preference.

in this case, the VX8100 definitely has more than cons, especially compared to the E815.

My general impression I've gotten from reading various places about both phones and handling the e815 alongside the vx8000 (haven't touched a vx8100 yet) is that most LG complaints could easily be addressed in a firmware release while the moto complaints are mostly just the way the hardware is.

The biggest thing that turned me off the e815 was the build quality. It didn't even feel as sturdy as my vx4400.

I agree, I have the E815, I bought it 1 1/2 weeks ago and I know I could trade it for the lg 8100 but I had to pay retail for the e815 and I'd have to pay retail for the lg 8100.(because my contract wasn't even a year old on my previous phone). The lg 8100 seems like a MUCH better phone. The e815 doesn't impress me at all. The vibrate mode really stinks and the looks are a little ancient. Reception seems ok but a little scratchy at times.
I mainly just can't bring myself to paying the additional $140.00 for the lg 8100(it retails for $439.99, I got the e815 for $299.99)

if you're buying the phone retail, then that definitely justifies keeping the E815.

the e815 isn't a bad phone at all. definitey worth the $299.99 price tag. but if i had to choose between the two, i go with the VX8100, cuz it only costed $50 more. but if i had to choose paying full retail, then the e815 is probably the choice. $439.99 for a phone is a lot. i can't see myself spending that much, unless it was an insane phone like the CDMA razr... lol. next year, next year.

It seems like from this thread what separates these phones from folks that have tried both is the 8100 fans value things like the speaker phone, external display, vibrate mode, build quality. People who like the E815 value the ability to use the speaker phone closed, bigger and maybe better display. In terms of build quality, I wouldn't doubt that the 8100 feels a little sturdier, for me, my E815 is incapsulated in a leather case so I don't really notice the quality of the plastic. I do notice the big and vibrant display, to me, having the biggest and best display enhances the phone in a big way. I can live without not having the ultimate vibrate mode or the best possible external display. I am pretty much after getting the phone with t...

I don't think there is a clear cut better phone here.

When two phone are of this level it is hard for there to be a clear winner. I was excited about the the e815 when I got it and was only a little more excited about the 8100 when I got it. it comes down to preference when both items are good. It was hard to give up that huge display but it made the phone feel very large when open to me.

I'm trying to decide whether to get the LG VX 8100 or get the 8100 when it's out in MA and am seeking help with the decision. I'd really like to have bluetooth capability but have some questions that will help me with my decision. I've read the emails here and folks are so knowledgeable that I thought I'd ask my questions here-- Thanks for any advice you can give--

Camera: For those who have the 8100, could you comment on whether the camera on the 8100 is as good as the camera on the 8000 or is it better or worse? I'm especially interested in picture quality (day outside and inside and evening) and the number of pics it can save to the phone compared to the 8000?

Speakerphone: Also, compared to the 8000, is the speakerphone as good?

I am the most brand loyal person around and had the Motorola brick phone, the microTAC, and three different starTACs, and almost bought the T720. When LG came out with the first VZW pic phone I had to get it. Motorola needs to win me back now.
