way to increase power?

Hi,
reception at my home is rather spotty, and I need to use an external antenna just to make or receive calls. Is there some type of hack which will increase the transmitting / receiving power of the phone? Thanks.

I was told when shopping for phones that the phones are maxed out on transmit power as far as FCC regulations are concerned.
