E815 as low speed modem

I've been reading through these posts and haven't quite seen the answer to my question: I'm half-way into my 15 day trial period of a new E815 .. upgrading from a QUALCOMM QCP2035a, which I'm able to connect with a cable to my laptop and go on line via Verizon qnc dialing #777 at 14,400 bps - slow, but sufficient to get and send e-mail and do some banking on line. I only use my minutes, no additional monthly plan, and I wait till after 9pm or the weekend.

I found out that there is no data suite available for the E815 to enable me to do this. Can someone tell me if it is possible to use this phone as a low speed modem with no additional monthly plans? If not, what is the next best phone to upgrade to that will allow me to do this? Any clea...

If you use MPT and the correct driver, the phone is recognized as a Motorola USB modem. You can then use it to connect to the internet anywhere. But, you do need the correct driver and MPT needs to be updated to the latest version.

You can find the driver and the instructions in this forum in an earlier post. Just do a search for USB driver and you will find it.

Thank you ... Do you know if Verizon will charge for using this, ie .. requiring an additional plan, or will this just be minutes usage like I presently have with the older phone?

You will have to put ##dialup (send) into the phone to make it work as a modem. Mine installed on my laptop via bluetooth without any driver issues, found it as a generic modem. I have pulled almost 500kbps with it so far.
You can go in and limit the bandwidth doing the Menu 0 73887* 000000 Date rates. I beleive that would work... Some have said if VZW catches you using EVDO internet they can charge you the $80 plan... I'll take my chance and plead innocent ;)

Dumb question, but where do you type in the ##dialup to change the phone to work as a modem. I dialed it as ##342587 as I would a phone number and just got an calling error. Thanks.

Not sure why it wouldnt be working?
Did you try bonding to it already? Maybe that "feature" is disabled on yours?

the e815 will work as a modem. To get it going you need to first enable dialup on the phone as described in the other post. Then, if using a usb cable to connect to your phone, you need to hunt down the motorola e815/v710 usb drivers. Do a google search for them. Once you get and install them, you can set up a Dial Up Networking connection in windows as you're doing now.

It's fairly easy to set this up. You need to install your modem under Windows control panel; don't let Windows detect the modem, do a manual install and "have disk" and browse the file to find the modem driver.

I setup a new connection this way in Windows with Dial-Up Networking:

phone number: #777
username: @vzw3g.com
password: vzw (just those three small letters)

and i am surprised its giving only 14.4 kbps.. my existing phone with this type of connection gives me 148Kbps speed. (Nokia 3589i)

I'm amazed! I tried it and it worked for me. Pretty good speed too. Is there any charge from Verizon besides airtime?
