coincidentally i'm due for a new cell phone and also considering a pda type device to manage my work schedule/contact info. i really don't want to carry around two seperate units if possible (although i will if it turns out most practical). dialing directly out of my pda's contact listing would be nice.

wireless internet and email, while certainly valuable to me, is not critical and probably not in the monthly budget right now if its gotta be $20-50 monthly. believe me, i wish it was.

my question..is it possible to have a treo 650 (or even a 600 if i got a nice one used real cheap) on verizon WITHOUT a data plan? i've read other posts saying they are made to check the system for data every so often and there is no way to turn that ...

Yes, you have to be on a data plan. My wife has the 650 so I am familiar with the device. What you do is get on the pay as you go plan. That way you dont get charged anything if you never use it. If you want wi-fi then you need to get the treo 700 which will accept a wifi adaptor or get the xv6700 which has EVDO and wifi built into it. Good luck.

I emailed customer support with this question recently. They said I don't need a data plan and that I can request a data block on the account.
