650 on Verizon: May 1

jeffbridges

Just heard from a VZW business rep that the 650 will likely be avail for business users starting "second quarter," most likely by May 1. On whether the 650 will be able to access vzw's new broadband network: "I wouldn't bet against it."

However, in many cities, Verizon has only long-term, non-specific plans to implement EVDO (their high-speed data service). In the meantime, we'd all need to be happy with ~ 60K speed.

I'm in Chicago, and internally, Verizon can't tell me when they'll role it out in Chicago except for "maybe by end of 2005". Terrific (not)

I was told by a Palm Store employee that Sprint had bought up 100% or the 650 production capability. Unfortunately she couldn't say for how long. So, this is consistent with the other posts here! đŸ˜ŗ

I talked to a phone rep today and they stated that they weren't going to be carrying this phone the second quarter but he could be wrong but that is what he said.

I also heard through the Verizon grapevine that the 650 would probably be available second quarter. But the tech also told me Verizon was coming out with a broadband Palm-based phone (he did not know which manufacturer) in the fall that would "blow away the 650". Personally, I don't think I need the broadband capability but I will keep an eye out for more info.

OK, here's the "real deal". I have a friend who is a VZW employee and he said that the 650 is currently being tested, and that based on past experience, that means that it should be available within 6 weeks. Re: EVDO he was not sure but seemed to doubt that it would be supported in this phone. One thing is for sure: VZW *will* carry this phone.

Well, you're not going to believe this, but my friend, who is well-respected at VZW does not even know himself. I asked him last week about the 650 and, while he is pretty sure that it will be release, no one inside the company is giving him a release date!

On a side not, I showed him my hacked Sprint phone and he thought it was the coolest thing. If you go this route, make sure you call the data tech support people and just TELL them you have a 650 and they will allow you to purchase a data plan. If you don't, the ESN you give them will flag them that you have an Audiovox phone and they won't be able to get you on the data plan.

Based on what I heard, I am happy I bought a Sprint phone and hacked it, because I don't have any confide...

I dont know about the release date, but what I can tell you is that the 650 is definetly in testing and is going to have the FULL bluetooth capabilities. Secondly it is also ev-do capabable. For you that need your wireless syncing; the sync client is built in and doesn't need to use the hotsync cable to have the software downloaded. I'll keep everyone posted on more capabilities as I keep plating with it.

Dear Marc,

Thank you for contacting the Verizon Wireless website. We are happy to assist you with your Treo 650 question.

The device manufacturers specifically designs the handheld to each wireless carriers network. The Treo 650 would not be supported on the Verizon Wireless Network at this time. Verizon Wireless has not released any information regarding this particular device. We apologize for the inconvenience.

"The Treo 650 would not be supported on the Verizon Wireless Network at this time. "

This indicates that they have not yet released the Verizon 650 which we already knew.

My bubble is still intact.

We're not sure what question you submitted to them, but from their response I'd say maybe youasked if you bought a CDMA Treo 650 if you could use it on the Verizon network today?

Hi Juice....

Your assumption was correct.

After a meaningless reply and a suggestion to my simple question about when Verizon will carry the 650.....

This was the question I posed:

Please help me understand by answering a few additional questions.

Sprint and Cingular have had the Treo 650 since Fall of 2004. In fact these companies are offering some generous rebates right now for the 650.

What do they do that Verizon cannot? The local Verizon store indicated the time frame as several weeks. Are you saying this information is incorrect?

If I purchase a unit directly from PalmOne, can it be connected to Verizon?

Since I have been a Palm user for several years, the Blackberry is not an
option for me. The in-store...

Last night, I called a local FL Verizon store, and when I asked about the Treo 650, the manager responded quickly "We will be carrying it, but I don't know when." He went on to say that his regional manager had announced this on a call earlier. He told me to keep checking back (3-4 weeks). When I pressed him further, he said he was "CERTAIN". He even felt it was going to be EV-DO capable. Believe me, I am very hopeful but VERY skeptical skeptical that VZW will get the 650, and I pressed him hard. We was CERTAIN I tell you. Another data point amongst the confusion.

My source at Verizon (a sales representative who sold me a large plan back in December) commented 'more like June.' The important thing is, he didn't deny that it was coming.

One caution, however, is that PalmOne is dropping prices on units, which is commonplace before it announces new units.

It would be par for the course if Verizon got the 650 just as PalmOne announced a '750' or something like that which blew the 650 away.

I'll remind you that Verizon didn't get the Kyocera 7135 until the Treo 600 was already out for other providers!
