Being an owner of a phone from the first batch (a StarWars version with the orginal firmwire "r1a033") and a new pround owner of the newset version ("r2a016") (it hadn't been 30 days since my purchase, I just took it back!) I felt compleled to list what I noticed as differences. Feel free to add to the thread if you notice something I haven't.

--- NO MENU LAG!

--- NO SHUTTER SOUND!

--- UNLIMITED Video Recording!

--- ScreenLight OnTime shorter (Very noticable. Obviously done to perserve battery power. The screen doesn't stay lit very long. Don't touch any buttons or blink for a second and your screen is black as night. A con esp. during time were you are reading a text message.)

--- Smaller Cam. Pic PhotoID (This is a con for m...

I just got my phone 3 weeks ago - it has all the Starwars stuff. I don't care much about the starwars stuff; is there any way I can get this firmware OTA?

As far as I know (because I researched throughly AND called and bugged Cingular & Sony Ericsson) there is no way that it can be done OTA. You'll have to get a new one like me, or beg SE and send it to them for some huge price ($200???) and all your stuff is gone. I heard you can get it done somewhere for 30 bucks though.

UPDATE:

---Another thing I've noticed is that along with the menu lag, the key tone lag is fixed as well!

I JUST traded my s710a for a new one and got the same old firmware r1a033......I want the new firmware version r2a016, how can I get in NOW!!!!

Cingular sucks and Sony is not much better they are clueless as to what firmware even is. They point fingers back and forth to each other but NOTHING gets accomplished.

I miss Sprint they were great and very current on firmware issues. take it to store and they flash it on the spot.

Gettin' the New One:
Just take it back again and tell them you're bringing it back because you want the new firwire. They were understanding with me (you have 30 days anyway, you could take it back every month if you want). Ask for a box from their newest shipment, and check the firmwire there b4 you leave. That's what I did.

Losing the StarWars "CRAP":
Dunno why you wanna do this. I love StarWars and the files aren't taking up that much space. But since they are imbedded in the phone I think the only way to lose them is through a master reset (losing everything else in the process). BUT if you get the new version there will be no StarWars stuff anyway.

Sony actually want $35.00 to upgrade the FIRMWARE!!! 😡

What kind od B.S. is that they want to charge me on a 30 day old phone because thier Firmware sucks and needs an upgrade! And in all this they can't even confirm the version number so I may end up with the same damn firmware! Cingular is usesless in this whole mess.

Dude take a chill pill. You're just going about it all wrong. Go in the store, tell them you want to exchage. Ask for the newest s710a they got. LOOK ON IT YOURSELF and check the firmwire. That's what I did. Not hard at all. Took me all of twenty minutes. The new firmwire is r2a016 and the old is r1a033. You kind find it on the phone by pressing >*

You guys just need to do an exchange by mail. Cingular and Sony Eric. provide a one year warranty on the phones so if you call
1-800-801-1101 and make up a reason to exchange you phone( i.e. it doesn't always charge, or it randomly shuts itself off), they will send you a new phone. I did this exact thing saying that it didn't charge all the time and they sent me a new s710 with the new firmware. 😉

Been there done that... They send you a REFURBISHED phone and if you send it in that is your ONE time replacement next time they charge you! It is rediculous but I spoke to them at length about it.

You're wrong. I JUST did an exchange by mail, and typically they will send you a referbished phone, but because the phone is so new, I received a brand new one. Also, as long as your phone is in warranty the will never charge you. Every time my phone gets a lil scratched I do and exchange by mail. In the last year I have done 9 warranty exchanges and never have been charged!!! You're WRONG!!!

Sorry Mr. Dreamer. I was just posting what was told to me by a SE employee. I have no idea what happened with you. Could there possibly be more than one SE employee? You know kinda like when you get ten different answers to your one question from multiple Cingular reps? Anyways, the SE guy on the phone told me $200 cause warrenty doesn't cover that. Now YOU please don't post rude post. DONE!

Firmware updates really arent warranty related issues which is why I dont understand why he'd tell you that but we all get an idiot from time to time when it comes to any sort of customer service. I've always had mine done for free, I've heard people gwetting charged $30 but no more than that. My suggestions is that you call technical support for Sony Ericsson and tell them your phone is very slow and what not, that way its not you sending it in for a firmware update but for really slow menu's, therefore under warranty they'll give you the firmware update because something *is* wrong with the phone as opposed to you wanting it just for the hell of it. And sure your menu's may not be all that slow or they may be, either way its a valid co...

Why should we (legitimate owners and customers of Sony-Ericson and Cingular) have to lie about this?

Why does Sony-Ericson NOT offer a FREE and immediate update to it's customers? For what is a PRODUCT DEFECT and buggy and UNFINISHED software.

Even a better question is how can CINGULAR be so incompetent as to NOT be able to offer it's customers a simple firmware flash at it's stores. How can their "tech support" (SIC) people be so untrained as to NOT even know what a firmware update is!
