Your Complaints?

From what you know about this phone and so forth, what are the things you don't like about it.

The one and only thing about it that bugs me is that it doesn't support Memory Stick Duo Pro, and that's about it.

What do you not like about it? 😳

Oh yeah, one more complaint about it. The fact that it's not out yet!!! 👿

- Definitely the Memory Stick limitation, 128 MB is really not that much when MP3's and video are involved.

- This is more of a Cingular thing, but the fact that you need a Data Connect plan to use the EDGE feature.

- Big screen means more area to scratch.

- Some sites say it does, some don't say, but I hope it supports MP3 ringtones. (I had the P800, which would play MP3s, but you couldn't set them as ringtones, I always thought that was stupid)

Other than that, we'll have to wait until it's out to really criticize it more.

Biggest thing for me is it's lack of availablility. I dont have such a huge issue with the memory limitation - my current phone has a camera and usually only has 5-6 photos before being uploaded to my site.

I had an mp3 phone before that which I loved but i've got my ipod, so anything less than a few Gb isn't going to get used for that purpose. I agree on the belt clip/holster/case thing. Haven't seen one i've liked yet.

Krussel makes a case that looks nice. I've found places to buy it from UK websites tho.

Seems kinda annoying to have to unbutton to take a photo, y'know? Otherwise, I agree - it is a pretty nice case.

But with these cases, will it allow the phone to be opened up or not? Cause I'd hate to have to take my phone out everytime I wanted to text someone or need to use the keypad for whatever.

My friend who has an s700i bought some someone clear hard piece of plastic to put over the display, and everytime it gets scratched up she replaces it with a new one to make it looks nice again. They were for the P series phones, (P800, 900, 910). And since they have relatively the same size display, they have a great fit. The only downside to that is it only protects the display.

I suppose you could use those PDA screen covers cut to size for it.

I have the Sony Ericsson S700i phone, which of course is exactly the same as the S710a just silver and without edge. I want to answer some of the questions other people asked about.

First someone mentioned bigger screen means bigger area to scratch. Thats false. The screen on the S700i and S710a phone are scratch proof.

Someone also asked if you could have MP3 ringtones. Yes you can have MP3 ringtones. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask me, and I will try to check here every couple of days.

That's the one I dont like. You have to do several steps to open the phone and to take pictures. I guess that's what you get with swivel design, they are unorthodox, so you get a weird case. 🤣

You don't have to open the phone to take photos. The only time you have to open the phone is when you need to access the keypad.

I really like that feature. It seems much easier than having to navigate over to the click a few buttons to turn the camera on. I hope it truely is just that easy.

Some phones aren't that easy. It may be just me but my camera phone lens should have a cover over it. I wish my phone did, cause after 2 yrs of having it in my pocket I can see very fine scratches on the 'protective layer' over the lens. Makes all the photos seem more out of focus.

You can use mp3 files as ringtones. For some strange reason, when utilizing an mp3 file as a ringtone, however, you CANNOT use the voice answer feature.

The other thing I don't love about the phone is that despite the large screen, the amount of the screen used for video playback is small, actually the same size used by the moto v600.

so you're saying that if you take an edge phone, stick it on your cart (like the v551 on the cingular site today), select the MEdia Works, and turn it on, you wont get EDGE speeds? that seems a lot like verizon gimping their bluetooth...

I agree. I think Cingular actually runs a legit business that would state that you'd need a Data Connect Plan in order to make any sort of use of EDGE.

I don't know, that's what I tried to figure out with my "EDGE Billing" post. And you know what, I still don't know. I believe it when I have the S710a in my hand getting EDGE speeds w/o Data Connect.

I just find it hard to believe that Cingular would let people get unlimited data, at EDGE speeds, with the $20/m Media Works plan and have the Data Connect plans at significantly higher prices. Who knows?

remember that even verizon, the most penny-pinching of them all has unlimited data on their EVDO for 15 a month.

also note: i went to the cingular store yesterday, picked up a flyer that says "cingular MEdia Max Your Mobile" at the top (white on top, green in the middle, and orange at the bottom in case you wanna check it out), it talks about the MEdia basic and MEdia works. on the back in the fine print it cleary states: "Inlimited MEdia package offer expires 1/31/05."

to me that reads: get your plan before the 31st with an edge phone and MEdia Works and hope the S710a comes out within 30 days so you can hold onto MEdia Works. but hey, maybe something better will come out on the first, who knows?

Media Works plans and the like are supposed to be used to connect from the Phone ONLY. These plans are not designed for those of us who tether laptops and PDAs for internet access. I can tell you that my Nokia 6230 does get me EDGE speed from my laptop and PDA. You don't have full "internet" access. That is you don't have access to all internet services. http, https, ftp, smtp and pop3 have all worked. My VPN clients have not worked. I would need a full data plan for this.

When my company starts paying the bill, I'll get the 79.99 unlimited, but until then media works is fine.

Interesting. I may do what NotJoelShapiro suggested and get the Media Works before the 31st. I don't really use data much, but with a big screen, EDGE and unlimited data, I'll find something to download. And I can always downgrade my media plan if I want (right?), hmmm.

I really want to try this out now and see what kind of data rates I get. Isn't there some site that will tell you what your connection speed is?

The fact that the video recording is choppy as if it was a 10 fps camera.
The fact that the belt clips are horrible.
