Observations and question on Alltel phone

Got one last night from Alltel. Here are some observations and questions.

Observations:

1) Its not a bad looking phone, and its not so big as to be a problem. I like the size, actually, and that middle button is easy to use (I probably have average size fingers).

2) The earpiece sound quality and volume are very good.

3) The reception: I've gotten 2 and 3 bars everywhere. Rarely 4. On my old Nokia 3-something brick phone, I had 4 in my house and around town. What's the deal there? However, I haven't had a call dropped yet. I mean, who cares how many bars there are as long as the thing works? But its still troubling. Anybody else have the same experience?

4) Have not noticed any bugs; no random shutoffs or anything l...

I have a couple of questions:

1. Do you find the middle button on the phone to be to small? (the button you have to press all the time)
2. How does the screen size seem?
3. To choose something on the menu, do you have to scroll up and down to select it, or can you just press a number to choose it?
4. Can you press a single button to record voice memos?
5. Have you tried using the calendar? What did you think?

No not really. It feels small, but I always end up hit it correctly. Not a problem.

2. How does the screen size seem?
Seems fine to me. Its not exactly a 19" flat panel, but nothing's too small.

3. To choose something on the menu, do you have to scroll up and down to select it, or can you just press a number to choose it?
As far as I can tell so far, you have to scroll. But, each function is assigned a number which is displayed in the corner of the screen when that icon is highlighted. So there probably is a way to do it by number only.

4. Can you press a single button to record voice memos?
Yes. V...

Hey, if you're still reading this, I have two more questions if you don't mind...

1. You said the volume was "good"...do you ever have any trouble hearing people while you're on the phone? How about while you're driving in your car and on the phone? (despite some peoples objections, I do feel that talking on the phone while driving is always ok when you're going "I followed your directions, but where the hell is your house?" :-))

2. Have you had any problems with the speaker clarity at all? I know you said "good" about this one to. I have an LG 3200 right now, and while it's loud, I occasionally have trouble understanding people when it's noisy around me. It's like the speaker is losing some part of the sound (note that this only happe...

I have not had any issues with volume or speaker clarity. While in the car, I find that using the loudspeaker works best for me. I have never used a phone with an earpiece as loud as this one.

The loudspeaker on the 3200 is great. Do you get distortion or is it like the call is cutting out?

The problem I occasionally have with the 3200 is that although it is certainly "loud" enough, and in fact sometimes it's actually to loud, I still can't actually make out what the other person is saying. It's not cutting out, I don't know what the problem is, I just can't tell what they're saying. It's like they're not pronouncing stuff quite well enough, even though I know they are.

Like I said, it's only noticable occasionally.

P.S. "While in the car, I find that using the loudspeaker works best for me."

That's what worries me, it sounds like maybe it's not quite loud enough...

Thanks!

i do not have problems hearing people through the ear piece. obviously, its a new phone and a new feel in my hand and so occasionally i won't have the ear piece set right at my ear. but that will pass.

the clarity is actually excellent, even at high volume. there is no distortion from the speaker. i have not used it yet in a *very* noisy environment, like a bar or concert, so i can't speak to that.

when i'm in my car i use the car's built-in bluetooth phone, which is one of the main reasons i got this phone. so i can't say how you would fare in your car. i imagine you would be fine unless you had the top down and cd blasting and were cruising at 80.

also, the speakerphone is great and i find i am using it a lot, and nobody has...

1) What's up with the reception? Two bars? Thoughts on that?

That sucks...

2) Is there any way to adapt standard RCA minijack headphone set to fit that little jack on the top of the phone? I just want good stereo headphones for mp3's without (hopefully) having to buy a new "phone only" set. Any ideas?

I attempted to try a 2.5~3.5 adapter and it does not work. I purchased a home made lead on ebay for about 30$. The price sucks, but it is worth it until the AD-15 from Nokia is released. I assume that accessory will be around 25$ anyway.

3) Does anyone know if the phone will work with an older version of Nokia PC Suite (4 or 5)? I don't have XP and so I can't run v6. Can the phone transfer data to and from MS Outlook i...

"I use an A-Data MyFlash 1 GB MMC and it is awesome. SD cards will not work in the 6255 and you can damage the phone if you attempt to use one."

HolyMoto,

I am just wondering where you bought your 1 GB MMC because i am looking for one and i am having a really hard time finding one.... any info would be great

SD cards are too thick. The metal cover won't close properly if you try to use one. I use a 512 MB MMC with no trouble so far....

Hey mdb432, if you're still reading this, how is the vibrate on the phone? Is it strong? weak?

i don't really use vibrate that much, so i'm really not that familiar with what is a good level and what is an insufficient level. but i tested it out and, to be honest, i was not that impressed. with the phone in the pocket of thick cotton baggy gym shorts, i couldn't really feel it. my guess is that in the pocket of suit pants it'd be ok.

The 710 DOES have excellent reception. I think you're going to be much better off with the 710. The lack of bars and reception with the 6255i is going to bother you, BIG-time.

That's very strange, as I've heard the nokia has very excellent reception (actually, I've heard it and the 710 has basically identical reception). What's happening with your phone certainly seems pretty crappy though. hmm.

I have the e815 myself (the phone after the v710) and although it supposedly gets as good of reception, I can't say I'm overly impressed at the momemnt...

I've been using this phone for about 3 weeks now and haven't had any issues with reception. Took it on a road trip to San Diego this weekend and had basically 3 to 4 bars the whole time in San Diego. When I'm in Phoenix I usually have 3 to 4 bars also. I have Alltel as my provider.

I have to give an update. Today the bluetooth just up and died on my phone. Since I was already planning on returning the phone for a hopeful replacement I wasn't too disappointed. I went into my Alltel store and spoke with the same salesman that I talked to a couple days ago. He did a DOA replacement for me and I got a new handset. The signal level indicator on the phone isn't much different than my first one, but reception is much improved. I was able to drive all the way home without dropping a call. My first 6255i never was able to make it that far before dropping out. So far this phone is doing as well as my old Nokia bar style which has been the benchmark for reception in my area. I hope my problems are solved. And the blueto...
