Why Switch over to GSM from Verizon?

Could use some thoughts here. I was thinking about changing over to Cell One from verizon, due to better phone selection. However, are they are any pro's to going over to GSM?. The coverage area doesn't seem to be as large as Verizon...and I'm told that AT&T, Cingular service sucks. Local is provided by Cell One, and roaming by the others. What to do?

I thought I would respond since you haven't had much feedback on this question. I work for Cingular, for whatever thats worth, and have become quite familiar with their coverage and specs.

One advantage of GSM is that it is the next phase in cellular service. Digital is being phased out and the rest of the world is already using GSM.

The practical advantages of GSM as far as I know relate to the extended capabilities in data transfer. Internet, text messaging, streaming video, etc., all of these things are done more easily on a GSM system. Another practical advantage is that users have the ability to store their phonebook information on the SIM card (a computer chip in the back of the phone) rather than just on the phone itself....

Thanks...I tried to send you an e mail to no avail. I am with verizon now, but might switch to Cellular One (Dobson Comm)....I like the phone selection much better, but I am not into the cameras and such. My concern is that Verizon is very good, but would consider the switch over to GSM if I knew the signal would be just as good. Anything I read is how Cingular/ATT service is horrible...and since I would use those towers while roaming, its a concern....any thoughts would be appreciated. I am also in the need of advise on weather the Sony T637 and Nokia 6200 are worthwhile, and if so...which would might be better for just making and receiving calls
