Should I get a T637

I've narrowed my search down to this or the Nokia 6200 for use on AT&T's GSM network (I've decided to go GSM for many reasons). I've been a Nokia phone user for a long time now and they work well but they're pretty boring. If the Nokia had Bluetooth it would be more compelling (I guess the 6230 will, whenever it comes out here).

I like the features of the SE T637 and a buddy swears by his T616 (also a former longtime Nokia user). On the other hand, I've read about echos/background noise and poor battery life, and this must first and foremost be a quality telephone. The other question I have is are there good belt clip solutions for this phone?

Before deciding on a phone, do this:

1. Grab each phone you're considering buying and go outside of the store. You want normal background noise, like you get on a sidewalk or in a mall.

2. Call a friend and speak a few sentence. Alternatively, call your home answering machine.

3. Ask your friend about the background noise(or dial your answering machine and listen to yourself from a regular phone).

I'm done with Sony Ericsson phones. It's time that we all stop worrying about games and cameras and ask the manufacturers to concentrate on call quality and connection reliability.

I'll second that!

Oh, and adding bluetooth functionality to phones also, with hands free voice dialing thru a bluetooth headset it should hopefully making driving safer (from the idiots who can't drive & talk on cell phone at the same time)

Cheers,

The Cingular stores in my area do not seem to offer 'live' phones that you can take outside or even try out. Is this something you can request?

I'd love to find a store that "DID" that in the U.S.!!!! I don't think you'll "EVER" see that happen and I've yet to find a store that would let me make a call on their phone.

Yeah, they're probably afraid someone will run off with it. The sad part is it's probably happened. Classic case of a few people ruin it for everyone.

A cingular store in Van Nuys, CA was nice enough to let me put down a deposit and test out a phone for a few hours. That was very nice of them. You can also just sign up and then return it during 15 day grace period

Thanks for the input. I like the phone and will probably get one. If I have voice quality issues I can always swap it for a Nokia or something.

I've had a t637 for about 2 1/2 months. Overall I really like it. I have had no problems with echoing or call volume.
I think on the SE page it lists up to 14 hours of talk time, I don't think thats the case, it's probably about half that. Standby time seems good though.
The bluetooth implementation seems very good, I have had not problems syncing the phone over bluetooth with OS X. I bought a Bluetake G3 bt headset, and that works fine also.
I got the leather case w/belt clip from Cingular and it works well, but it's overpriced at around $20 I think.
When I first got the phone, I had some problems with calls dropping or being interrupted for about 20-30 seconds or so with the message displayed "encryption switched off" according to the ...

I ended up buying this phone and am very glad I did. I love this phone! Reception is amazing, the features are unbeatable, the voice quality superb, the internet works well, and the menus are just fine to navigate for this long-time Nokia user.

Re: reception, my Nokia digital phone barely worked at my house but this one works great. Better still, I was the only guy who had cell service worth a darned while on a dirtbiking vacation last week (I'm on AT&T but as noted we can roam onto Cingular now and that's what I was on in Stillwater, OK). This also meant lots of other people got to borrow my phone to call home when night/weekend time kicked in. And I was even able to keep up with current events by surfing onto CNN and CBS MarketWatch...

Thanks for this review. I am also a lifetime Nokia user, and I've never had a phone with any of these newer features like camera, internet, bluetooth, Outlook syncing, e-mail, etc. I'm looking to get a new phone for both me and my wife, and right now I can get $240 cash back for 2 of these phones with a family plan from AT&T. It's an amazing deal, but will my non-technical wife like this phone?

I also have questions about the bluetooth headset function. If money were no object, which headset works best with this phone? Should I stick with the sony-ericsson brand?

I have also heard mixed things about the magic word function on this phone. Is it as great as it sounds? Does it work with bluetooth if you have the right Sony-Ericsson...

I liked mine so much that I just got one today for my wife and she loves it (same AT&T dealas you BTW). She may never use all the functions as I do, but she's figured out everything from how to lock the keyboard to change her ringtones to taking a LOT of pictures. She even found the calendar and wants to use that.

I haven't done the bluetooth headset yet but have friends who've used the Jabra with SE phones and really like it. I guess once I figured out it's another set of batteries I had to worry about my enthusiasm waned. However, my wife loves the idea since she wouldn't have to take her phone out of her purse.

I've yet to use the voice dialing features yet but that's next...
