No Use for MPx220 on Cingular!

Anybody that buys this phone and expects to get all the functionality as promised will be sadly dissapointed. It does not: 1. work as a modem 2. download POP3 email using Messaging 3. Allow you to access the internet using your bluetooth PDA. It's a great phone, but those business people that need mobile office functionality/connectivity need to know; this will not be your solution. It's so bad, Cingular has authorized me to cancel my account because they acknowledge they don't support it! The phone works great (so what?!) and the outlook info synchs easily (as it should!). I have expended countless hours to find all this out.

I'm getting all the functionality I want out of it. It synchs nicely with my Exchange Server. Cingular does offer data plans so you can use the phone as a modem for your laptop/pda, but the prices for those plans are a little much for me ($79.99 unlimited). You can use the phone as a modem with the Media Works package, but I haven't tried it yet; however countless people over on www.howardforums.com have gotten it to work. Search for tethering in the forums.

I haven't had any problems with limited functionality due to Cingular. This is a great phone, and I'm using it to its full potential.

I keep getting mixed answers from Cingular -- including from a friend who works there. He says it is on their price list, which means it's eminent. However, it isn't showing up. I visited a store the other day when my friend wasn't available, and that guy told me he was very disappointed, but he had been told that it was NOT going to be available at all.

I think I'm giving up and going Blackberry.

It is available at our Cingular store (Canton, Oh). BUT WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD WANT THIS PHONE! IT IS SO FLAWED.

You are absolutely correct to wonder about my sanity!

My reasoning is this: I believe that a PDA phone using Microsoft's Pocket Windows is a far better choice (for my office) in the long haul than a Blackberry/server option. With a Blackberry, you can only view attachments. You cannot open and edit attachments. Also, with a Blackberry, there are only 2 ways to receive Outlook email: 1) Leave your computer turned on, logged in and Outlook open, or 2) install the Blackberry (Good Technologies) server, which interacts directly with Exchange.

However, using a Pocket Windows phone, you are able to use the built-in Active-Sync function that will pull your email from Exchange without having your computer logged in. (continuously running desk...

I understand your needs. I've debated for weeks about getting the 220. My son got one and after 2 wks returned it. With the new (2nd) firmware it might work for you.
Blackberry sounds like a good alternative. Good luck.

I ended up with the Moto v551. its an absolutely wonderful phone w/ edge. Not a smart phone but works for my needs.

Thanks for the insight. This particular phone really scares me. I just wish I had the luxury of waiting for the next version of these things. I hear there is an mpx300 around the corner.

And, it sure would be nice to have one using the Razr format!I appreciate your help.

I'm glad you're getting your full potential. I'm not. The phone won't sync with my Exchange Server. The camera won't even taken pictures at all now--not even the ones with the lines all over the pictures. The Internet works fine. I can call just fine. Let me not say anything, it might stop working. Yet, Cingular Exchange By Mail is giving me the runaround. I have spoken to several reps today and even been transferred to Motorola. BB doesn't help, they send me to Cingular. Cingular XBM said my phone needs to be 15 dyas old or older to receive phone with new firmware from them.

I had trouble synching with my Exchange server at first. Are you using a self-generated Certificate? That was my problem and I had to export the certificate and then copy it over to the phone then open it from the file manager on the phone which installed it. Now all my contacts, calendar, and emails are all synched up with my Exchange every few minutes. One problem I am having is that when it is synching I am not able to receive phone calls. That's pretty ridiculous.
I got the new firmware today, but I haven't really had time to mess with it. It does look like the camera is a little better, but I'll post back when I have had the phone a few days.
Hope you guys have better luck convincing XBM to send you the new firmware.

Another thing I had to do to get the phone to sync with Exchange is run this on the computer that has ActiveSync connected to the phone. It disables the Security Certificate checking and allows "not trusted" certificates.
