In the first place, the 840 doesn't yet have FCC approval. Which means that it will be cleared for sale in the US sometime in the SECOND half of 2004. At that point, the carriers who are carrying gsm get to bid on test and work (the worst of) the bugs out of the phone. After all this, it will probably be December or 2005. I have been waiting long enough for the v710 thank you very much.
Second, it is a GSM. I don't have any plans on being in Rome in the next few years. I live and work in the US, therefore it is more important that I have excellent coverage here. On the subject of GSM vs CDMA coverage I thought it might be good to point out all the troubles GSM is having with their bandwidth limitations. They're already having to introduce things like WCDMA, tacked on to the GSM phones, in Europe to accommodate high data usage features like streaming video. If I'm not mistake WCDMA is based on CDMA. (Thus CDMA in the name.) Unless things like ultra spectral modulation are perfected then CDMA is the clear leader.

Yes the A840 will be available for Verizon Wireless but like technoho said, it won't be available until the second half of the year. There also seems to be some confusion whether or not this phone will have Bluetooth and from the latest feature list from Motorola, it will NOT. Just look at this document on the A840 from Motorola's web site and you'll see no mention of Bluetooth.

So if you need Bluetooth with Verizon service, the V710 is the way to go. The only reason to get the A840 is if you travel outside the United States a lot because of the GSM support.
