What happened to CONTACTS categories?

Hi, this is probably a dumb question, but after VZW fried my old phone during a software update, I got a new handset which seems to have been improved. Only issue I have so far is HOW COME I CAN'T SEE THE CONTACT CATEGORIES WHEN I "SCROLL" THROUGH THEM? My old handset, I could see what list I was looking at (vip, Personal Business, etc.). Now when I scroll through them, the heading is always Contacts.

Anyone know what the problem is or how to fix this?

Did you set yours up in Phonebook>Categories>New or are you expecting some pre-set ones? Mine (40.0R) works fine.

I set up one list in Contacts>Categories>New but even with that, the heading while scrolling (by using # or * keys) always says Contacts.

I can see the preset categories (All, Business, Personal, General, vip) when I access Catgories>Menu and I can see my custom category. But when I revert to looking at the entries, I can never tell which category I'm looking at.

Yours says "Contacts"? Mine says "Phonebook" (or whatever the other Category names I've created).

Nowhere--that I see--does it say Contacts.

Hmmmm...????

Yeah, this was one noticeable change from my old handset. It is not called phonebook anywhere.

My current software version is 8700_01.40.0R

Who else would know anything about this?

Yup, with VZW as well.

I called my local VZW store and spoke with a tech person. He said that the v710s in the store have the same problem/issue. He has a v710 as well but his is running on older software and doesn't seem to have this problem.

I don't know quite what to make of it. I may call Motorola and see if they are aware of this...but I'm not sure if that's within the purview of VZW since it's their software. IF I get another phone, that'll be my FIFTH v710.

The v710 is making my life unnecessarily complicated.

That's really too bad. I've loved my V710 since I got it in October. I count myself lucky as others have had a variety of problems.

I just spent another 10 minutes poking about the phone and can't find any way to make it say "Contacts" instead of "Phonebook". Hope you get this fixed.

OOH, you lucky duck! I really would love this phone if I didn't have such bad luck with it. 🙄

Thanks for your concern. I HOPE that I don't have to get this one replaced too. I've learned to not get attached to anything on my phone after having to repeatedly forfeit it with each replacement. *sigh*

i just got a new v710 today (the earpiece died on my old one), and it has newer firmware ( .0R) ... i noticed this problem also, and it is really annoying.

just like has been said previously, it does not say the name of the category that is being displayed at the top of the phonebook ... every category has the name "contacts" at the top.

my old v710 (old firmware) displayed the names properly.

Hi there!

If you are on the main contacts page, that is ALL contacts, and every name says contacts at the top. You can use the * or # keys to cycle through listings of all members in each defined category... they are using category to sort users in this version of the software.

Hi,

I just got my (first) v710 and was messing with the Contacts menus system. I couldn't figure out what the '*' and '#' buttons were supposed to do, since nothing would change except for some of the entries would not appear. Now I realize that I'm having the same problem - it always says 'Contacts' at the top, not the category name....

Any solutions found?

Thx,
Dog

Nope, unfortunately not. I got in touch w/ Verizon, which wasn't productive, and Motorola, which also wasn't productive. Maybe they'll address this in another software update in the future? It couldn't hurt to alert them of this issue because it makes the categories option in the contacts list much harder/less convenient to use.

I agree. It would be much more intuitive if the category was listed correctly, and I'm guessing that's what was intended.

It seems weird that some have the problem and some don't - even with the same software rev. Is there something else that could be different? Maybe an upgraded 40.0R is somehow different from a brand new 40.0R? (I have no idea if this could be the case - I'm just throwin' ideas out)

I wonder why more people aren't complaining of this? 😕

I guess as I migrate my numbers into my v710, it'll be more obvious which category I'm looking at, but still.... ☚ī¸
