Do 2 phones with 2 carriers give you more land coverage than 2 phones with 1 carrier??

Do 2 phones with 2 carriers give you more land coverage than 2 phones with 1 carrier?

We have a Nextel phone(with a cheap group rate plan) and an old Motorola StarTac (TDMA and analog) phone with Cingular in DC area. I have to make a decision whether I should change my plan phone with Cingular to Nextel or sign up a 2 year plan with cingular GSM with Motorola V400.

My thinking is maybe when my family is in one car(or together) we will have 2 phones with 2 carriers which give more coverage. Right?! For example, yesterday my wife and I were waiting in the movie theater for friends and decided to call them. Nextel phone had no signal and I used my cingular and made the call. I know, you are thinking that I answered my own question. But no...

Go to Cingular and get a Nokia 6340i. This phone is both gsm and digital. With it, you have complete nationwide coverage. If you buy it on line the cost is zero with a 2 year contract
