I am having difficulty sending ringones from my desktop to my phone. Gumby's instructions are great but it will not work for me. Here are the steps I am taking:

1. I went to "my computer", and found "Folder Options" in the drop down menu. Under "Tools", Folder Options, clicked on the "view" tab. In "view", UNCHECKED the box that says "Hide file extensions for known file types".

2. Went to www.walmart.com, clicked on the "music" tab, and searched for the song that I wanted.

3. Right-clicked on the song and chose "Save As..." and saveed it to my desktop as .mp3

4. Went to www.goldwave.com. Downloaded their free music editor. Installed it.

5. Opened the 30-second song that I downloaded from www.walmart.com in Goldwave once I...

The phone accepts only .mid files, not MP3 songs. Sometimes you can "fool" the phone into thinking it is a .mid file by just changing the extension, but sometimes the phone is also "smart" enough to know the file is still in the MP3 format. Just changing the extension certainly does not make it a .mid formated file! 😢

Try downloading an MP3 to .mid converter program and doing a true conversion of the file and I think you will not have any more problems.

Yes, sometimes just changing the extension works, and other times it doesn't, why? I don't know!! 🙄

A search will bring up many converters, some free and some at a moderate cost.

I can't understand why it worked for other people. Here are the instructions that other people have successfully used.

I agree - it's *amazing* that phone that can't deal with MP3s could deal with one with just a changed extension.
MP3 and MIDI are about as far apart as you can go encoding wise! It's like speaking Chinese or speaking C++; the "languages" don't even work at the same level.

(Gumby's previous post said to SAVE it at 22050 hz, 24 kbps, mono. If you don't do this, it might be too big for your phone. Basically, what you've done here is made the mp3 small enough for your phone.) I AM NOT SURE HOW BIG I SAVED IT AS....WHERE CAN I CHECK THIS OUT?

This step is critical, and cannot be skipped. IT IS the reason your attempts have failed.

When saving the file in Goldwave, look on the popup panel where you enter the filename and choose file type. There are additional options available. This i...

7. I Right-clicked on the new, smaller mp3 that was savedon the desktop. Clicked on "Rename" and rename it with ".mid" as the file extension. I received the alert box saying something like "this file might not
function," and I clicked OK.

Ok... this is the first time I have tried doing this on my phone, so bare with me.
🙄
I followed all the steps in the previous posting, but am recieving the same message as knice, but adjusted the "22050 hz, 24 kbps, mono" option. I think where the problem is coming is when I try to rename it to .mid, it shows filename.mid.mp3. This might just be my stupidity, but what am I doing wrong??? 😳

Any help will be greatly appriciated! 😁

You have to delete the ".mp3" portion of the filename. It is normal to get the "this file might not function" message. Click OK and send it to your phone. You should be all set from there.
