Ringer-ID/Distinctive ringer problem

I am now on my third phone (SCH-A650 Verizon service) in less than two weeks. Here is the problem and I hope someone has a fix or a solution of some sort.

When I download a customized ringtone from either Ringster or Modtones (via the Get It Now feature of a Verizon phone) and assign it to a specific person, everything works great...until I turn the phone off. When I turn it back on, all the downloaded ringtones assigned to different people are wrong. The phone actually advances the ringtone one place in the selection list. In other words the distinctive ringer feature is useless if the battery ever goes dead.

Verizon doesn't seem to have anything on this and the only help they have offered is, you guessed it...another phone!

hiya...this is a known software issue, and samsung is working on a fix...changing the phone out for you will unfortunately not fix the problem unless it has the corrected software, which has yet to exist... 🙂

Yes thank you for your reply. I contacted Samsung and they are aware of the problem. The technician told me that no matter what you download (wallpaper, ringtones, etc.) if you get them from more than one source (Get It Now-source)it will scramble the ringtones. They are working on a software fix, but did not have a timeframe for it.
In the mean time Verizon gave me another phone, this time a LG VX-4500.

When Samsung puts out software fixes (for bugs like the distinctive ringer mix-ups), how do you get them on your phone?

Where would I go to find out that such a fix has been made available?

Also, does anyone know how reliable Samsung is with releasing updates and fixes? Is this something we can expect to happen, if not soon, then eventually? Do they have a history of standing by their word?

I'm trying to decide between the a650 and LG's VX3200. Looking for a reliable phone that above all offers good reception and voice clarity, minimal dropped calls, and an easy-to-use-interface. Any advice?

Your carrier like Verizon should be able to upgrade your phone with any software fixes when they become available. There is also a way to do it from your phone, I believe it is *228 on a Verizon system (check with them anyway)

As for the phone, I ended up with an LG VX4500 and I do like it very much. Reception is great and I haven't had any issues with it...so far.
The LG VX4500 has a speaker phone which is also pretty good.

Thanks for the feedback, leopold. Where do they announce it once software updates have been released?

Anyone else have advice on the a650 vs. LG's VX3200? Is there a different website that would be better to post this question on?

*228 will only update your roaming list.....any software fixes or updates have to be "flashed" into your phone by a technician at a store, using a cable and downloading the new software directly into your phone....
