Is there a way to make the receipt of incoming messages silent when the ringer is on or vibrate is on. I'd like to be able to know the phone is ringing for a call but not necessarily be notified or interrupted by the incoming message.

Yes. Search for messages about "bitpim" or if you want to spend more money, you could buy DataPilot by Susteen or the Verizon mobile office softward. Any way you do it, you're going to need to buy a cable.
