Get a load of this one....

I just spoke to an AT&T tech rep (trying to shmooze for the newest flash), and she gave me some story that it is "illegal" to flash a phone with software from a country other than the one the phone was manufactured for use in. Does anyone have any insight on this issue?

Um...what?

I wish you had an AWID (employee ID number) for that one. She must be out of her mind! Why in the bluest of blue hells would a law maker say you can't flash your phone? They wouldn't even know what that is!!

But even in a black and white reality it goes like this, is it illegal for some little snot nosed dork to soup up his rusty little Honda Civic? Can you not get some cheese on your whopper? Will Linux run on a machine built for windows?

This world is based on individuality, customization, and freedom of expression. That is why Nokia is the #1 phone maker in the world. They found that out years ago when they made phones with express on faceplates, and downloadable monophonic ringtones and graphics.

Who knows what is...

The first line tech support person I talked to was named Natalie. She said that she got the information from a "next level hardware technician". She seemed a bit uninformed from the start.

I could see how it might be illegal in some instances to flash your phone. I'm not sure about here in the US, but maybe other countries.

I believe that in some countries, you can't use Bluetooth, either because the 2.4GHz spectrum is used by something else, or becauase it might anger the gods. In any case, a manufacturer might set up the software on the phone to disable Bluetooth for that country. So, flashing it with a Bluetooth-enabled firmware would be illegal.

Not sure if this is applicable, but it is possible that this CSR was right.

hmm.. well. i bought my phone over the internet. it was shipped from asia, for use in asia. probably made there too, along with my computer, tv, microwave, clothing, etc. etc.

so i can only flash it with asian software?

baahahaha..

sounds like a typical clueless support person just trying to scare you. booooooo. now buy an AT&T phone only, give us your money and go away like a happy sheep. don't think for yourself.

let them come get my "illegal" v600 out of my cold dead hands. i can't wait to be arrested for flashing my phone!

woa! hold on. Sure its your right to go and flash your phone. but make sure you flash it with software that is meant for use in the US.
If not you will potentially program in freqs that you are not supposed to transmit/receive on. in which case u r committing a major FCC violation. dont want to get into trouble with the FCC.
