HTC Hero (CDMA)
Will probably return Hero for another BlackBerry/calendar issues/alarm clocks/auto on/off
I have been using the Blackberry Curve from Sprint for just over a year. Now that customers can upgrade annually with Sprint, I took advantage of the heavy discounts and upgraded to the Hero. My first impression was so awful that I actually went to sprint.com and reactivated my blackberry. The next day I reactivated the Hero and I still have mixed reviews. I have not posted my review yet to phonescoop because I like to own the phone for 3 weeks prior to posting to make sure it's an accurate review and not an emotional review.
If the Hero could replicate a calendar like that of a BlackBerry, I would be happy. I have looked through the apps and cannot find anything to change the calendar. Currently, the Hero does not alert you of conf...

If you don't mind me asking a question about the Calendar issue ...
I use my calendar on my crappy little samsung slider religiously. I put events into it, I put private appointments into it, and even though the process of adding those events is cumbersome due to the keyboard (just a basic number pad) ... it will sill give me the option to alert me at whatever time I want on that day when my appointment is. Does the Hero not do this?

I am also a religious calendar user and if you have not signed up for Google calendar, I highly recommend it. Google calendar automatically sends alerts for your appointments. It's highly customizable.
The HTC Hero does allow and sends out alerts, however, the Hero is attached with Google all the way around. From phonebook to calendar to playmates, Google is the predecesor to Android on this particular phone.

Yes it does.
You can pick your appointment time, and then set a reminder that will go off before your appointment time.

Have you updated the firmware? There was a messaging issue that drained battery life - you might want to be sure you are running the latest firmware.
Settings->About Phones->System Updates->Firmware update
You might also want to disable the wifi or gps features if you don't use them.
As for the alarm, be sure your "Alarm Volume" is maxed as well. When choosing the sound for your alarm, hit the right rocker to maximize the volume if you have not already. You can also customize the number of alarm clocks you need by adding and deleting them.
If this still doesn't do the trick, I'd try adding custom alarm tones that have a higher volume to begin with.

Thanks for the suggestions. I Have done all of those suggestions. I am going to look for the app that you mention. I never thought of that. I guess after using an iPod touch for so long that I am just use to the ease of Apple touch screen. It is the best hands down....I just don't wAnt an iPhone because I hate ATT. I am going to keep fidgeting with it And yes I do have the latest firmware.
I do not, however, have android 2.1 because Sprint has not released it yet. I have two more weeks to make a firm decision.

The Android platform doesn't require you to constantly prove to Google that you aren't a criminal though like Apple's system.
Not to mention, you can install any app you want regardless of whether Google approves. You would never be able to do this on an Apple product without jailbreaking it.
As for Android 2.1, that will be coming to the Hero. It's just a question of when, not if.
According to Sprint, it will be by "1H 2010". June is the latest date, but there is every reason to expect it to be sooner.
It's rumored in Europe that Android 2.1 is going live mid-February.
Hero users can expect a substantial increase in functionality once it does go live.

Ok, thanks for the posting. I downloaded Timeriffic app and am REALLY liking it right now. Although it's not a complete powerdown... this should suffice.
Locale is another app but is $10 and Timeriffic is no charge.
Now, if I could just find a better calendar...I would be 100% set!

It's not a calendar, but you might want to check out the app "Astrid".
It's a nice to-do/task manager that I have found I use sometimes in place of the calendar depending on the circumstances.
