Question about Froyo 2.2 Install

OK, first of all I have looked and didn’t see anything, but if I missed something I am going to apologize up front for not seeing it. But it looks like the Moto Droid will get an official Froyo 2.2 release (just not sure when). But my question is, how does the update work? Since I have only had my phone for a few weeks (and I am still a Droid newbie) I have not been though the process of updating it. Is the update something like a patch where all you need to do is install it and you are done, or will it completely wipe the phone to where you will have to reinstall all your apps? Thanks in advance for everyone’s help and input.

The "official" updates are pretty good about not wiping things, although you never really know.

One of the really neat things about FroYo is that it will automatically reinstall your apps. It also can install the apps to your SDCard, rather than just internal memory, which gives you literally colossal space for apps. I have around 100 apps installed in internal memory, which is like 512 MB. You have at least 32 times that, if you can use the card. I know people with close to twice the apps, just in internal memory.

Also, under FroYo, your apps data can be stored in your Gmail account, so that hopefully moving forward, not only will your apps restore themselves, but they will bring all their data, too. Of course, that is the crux...

Now if the phone does wipe, and you have to reinstall your apps, you don't have to rebuy the ones you bought already do you? Say for example you buy Beautiful Widgets, and your phone wipes. Will you have to buy it off of the market again, or will it just let you download it again since you have already bought it?

I would like to root and install the leaked version, but since my wife works for Verizon Wireless she does not want me to do anything that would void the warranty. I know that you could always flash it back to stock, but I think she is just worried that something might go wrong and the phone will brick.

Care if I ask another question? Why do phones always have to be locked down? I have seen many themes that I would like...

You *should* be able to simply download and reinstall without having to purchase again; all of the purchased apps I have work this way, so it's reasonable to assume that this will work. Specifically Beautiful Widgets works this way. Of course, if the app for some reason doesn't support something in the new rom image, then it might not work...
