Hi, as others have stated, only a smartphone, blackberry, etc. will "push" email onto your device and let you know almost immediately if you have new mail.
With this phone you can set up email accounts and it will check every so often and alert you to a new message. There are a number of settings for the phone alerting you - I have mine set to "never" alert me when I get a new message as I don't want it waking me up at 4am for some Home Depot coupon, lol. I just use it to check my mail when I want to when I'm away from my PC.
I have two separate email accounts it can check, my home and my corporate and I had to input some more info for it to check my corporate email (it wanted to know the in/out mail servers).
