Is there a way to use this phone in a horizontal position with the keyboard closed?

yes there is. hit flip orientation and it will go the opposite of what its on now.

well there is another option of course.. you can root your phone.. and by doing so you can download the application Droidsans Tweak Tool in the Market which can enable auto rotation.. And as far as the on screen keyboard if you get Chomp SMS it displays the keyboard horizontally and vertically..
