NEED HELP!!

So I have about 10GB worth of songs on my iPhone 3G and my CDs were stolen. My friend at work was able to transfer his songs from his iPod to his computer why can't I? I have used google and downloaded a few random programs that ended up being viruses... anyone with a good trustworthy program that is free?????????
