Can you purchase the 3g iphone online w/ apple?
you can only purchase the iphone at the store apple/at&t and you have to leave the store with the iphone active under your name

With the original iPhone you would buy the phone wherever you wanted but when you turn the phone on it is non-functional until you plug it into iTunes and activate it. This is where you would choose whether or not you want to setup a new account or take over an existing number on your account. I assume the new phone will be activated a similar way. You may be able to get it activated in store with less effort on your part if you use an "upgrade" or activate a new phone line to get a discounted price.

...right, but you can only activate the Iphone3g at the store. they do not want you taking it home un-activated.
