Yes, I can do that with my 1st gen iPhone.

The 3G iPhone can now open PowerPoint docs as well but if I'm not mistaken 1st gen will be able to do that after the 2.0 software upgrade.

Not to get off topic too much but if you're looking for a superior performing, feature rich, business class device, IMO - the MOTOQ refresh coming out with windows 6.1 blows everything else out of the water with documents to go (create/edit word, excel, pp, .pdf and .zip), fastest qwerty tablet processor and the opera browser.

To my knowledge, the iPhone 3G will not be able to edit office docs.

NO the iPhone will not allow you to EDIT any document. You can VIEW a word, excel, or PDF document but it is read only without the capability to edit as of now.
