Temp Bold Substitute

4tail

Sep 2, 2008, 11:49 PM
I want to come over to AT&T in the Bold, but it looks like we might be waiting for a while for unknown reasons and the iPhone is giving folks fits. I am looking for a way to have a BB Curve with WiFi until the Bold comes out or whenever they get all the bugs worked out at AT&T. Can I buy the 8320 meant for T-Mobile and put my AT&T SIMM in it and it will work? All I want is to start my plan with AT&T and have WiFi and use the Bold as my new equipment. Really, any smart phone would work for me, but the BB seams to have the best reviews. What are my options? Right now I have a Treo on a CDMA network, so that won't work. Thanks!

😕 AT&T doesn't sell the 8320 that I know of. I think only T-Mobile has it. I would buy it used from eBay, or whatever. When the Bold comes out and gets everything worked out, I would be ready to go with it then as my new phone. I just want to get out of the CDMA mess and join my wife at AT&T but I need WiFi. Does that make sense?

If you "bring your own" to at&t, then want to get the new BB, you will be able to get your newer BB with a discount (either upgrade or new customer discount). I did this earlier with the HTC a year ago. You may have to try a couple of different stores to find a sales person that is knowledgeable enough to work the retail software but they can do it. 😁

According to out data rep, AT&T should be getting the 8320 within a couple weeks.

You need to be sure that it is an unlocked device in order for it to work on the AT&T network. An alternative is the BlackBerry 8820, which does have WiFi (but no camera)

Actually, 4tail, you do have options. I didnt bother to read through a bunch of ridiculous comments. In fact, if it means anything to you, I actually created an account here just to inform you that what a couple of responses are saying are not true.

Here it goes...First you need to go to purchase whichever phone it is you like through 3rd party. (many hate using ebay and craigslist but I've had much success) Call AT&T by dialing 1-800-331-0500 (make sure thats correct toll free #) get online with activations and explain to them that you have equipment and want to start a new line of service. You may have to push a bit and even get online with a Supervisor but you certainly can get a line of service without contract. I have done it ...

Twiztid, I didn't suggest that 4tail buy an unlocked phone. Granted, I also didn't tell 4tail not to buy an unlocked device. I know matter-of-factly that you can start service without a contract but the only way 4tail to know that is to try. Nonetheless 4tail, hold out and wait 3 weeks.

Help with unlocked phones with AT&T and I guess T-Mobile can vary, I've been given help, but I guess it was just a decent CS rep at a store. No they don't have to, no they shouldn't have to. (outside of maybe helping with adding the voicemail number if your phone doesn't pull it off the sim).

Information for adding data can be found on AT&T's site. Both SE and Nokia will help via their sites.

If it was me, and waited this long for the Bold, I would just wait the next few weeks and get it when released. If I was already with AT&T and my phone is broke and upgrade eligable, I'd do with the previous post say, get a cheap goPhone to carry me through, or find one on ebay cheap. Not a bad idea to have a small phone to carry when you do...

Thanks for all the info. My wife already has an AT&T contract with the iPhone and I would just join her for a family plan. Since there appears to be so much animosity about bringing existing or unlocked cell phones into a plan, I am going to wait well past the intro date for the Bold. I want to make sure it is right before I jump on the wagon with this.

Two things really bother me 😡
1) Why can't all of the carriers just accept the phones and move on. If I choose to bring my Acura to a Honda dealer, they can work on it for me as long as I pay the bill. That is reasonable. Just flat out not helping with anything is stupid and hurts business. That's just being arrogant and self serving.

2) Why can't all of the carriers be truthf...

As I said before, I have had no problems with unlocked phones with AT&T, honestly as long as you pay your bill, I think they can careless what you're using on the system, seeing it matches data plans. Right now I'm using a Nokia e71 great little phone. A few months ago, AT&T had a page on their website that did deal with people who brought their own phones with them. And did give some information on whats compatible, and how to set them up. No promises of tech support, but at least they acknowledged them. These customers are cheap for them to have.

CDMA carriers are somewhat different, no sim cards, wierdo esn swaps. Some carriers using different standards for programs like BREW vs. Java. BTW, before you do anything, check the new ...

That is good to hear that AT&T is at least open to folks bringing their own phone over. I am so done with Sprint. I feel they have some really great phones, but that does me no good when I can't either get a signal or drop ever call I try to make. VERY POOR service where I live and virtually no roaming for those distant areas. Sprint must have pissed off most of the other carriers because I rarely roam now. 2 yrs ago I did in many spots where they are dead spots for me now.

Actually the gov. has already done that, just that the carriers won't come out and tell you unless you push them. Bringing an unlocked phone over from another GSM shouldn't be a problem with any ATT rep, and if it is just simply walk out or hang up and go talk to a different rep because it was just that rep trying to push for a sale or some nonsince like that. As far as getting ATT service now you could go ahead with an unlocked phone or cheap phone or what ever if you bring your own equipment at the very least they could put you on a 1 year contract. Then when the Bold gets here some retail stores are authorized to process "exception upgrades" after you've had 6 months of service and give you the same discount price you would get for signin...

Buddy, I work for AT&T as well, and I can tell you we do have the option of a NO-CONTRACT Account. Been there, done that. If you are working for customer care, and you are not able to do that at all, then there is definately something wrong. There's my 2 cents.

I also work for AT&T customer service and it was changed effective 05/29/2008- Customers who pay full price for equipment or activate service with their own equipment may select a no commitment service agreement. This does not apply to the iPhone. So it is not getting over on the company, it is the truth. If your not sure who to believe just call customer service and ask.
