is there any way to quickly turn the phone to silent or vibrate as opposed to lowering the volume all the way?

open up the dial pad and press and hold the # key for vibrate.
To silence everything press and hold the volume side key (the down volume key)
To silence everything press and hold the volume side key (the down volume key)

You can do that ^ or you can press a volume key on the side, the volume levels will show up, just hit the volume level you want, bottom bar is complete sound/vibrate off, second bar is vibrate only, third bar is low ring...
