That's a great question.

I'm 95% sure the answer is no. That feature used technology unique to iDEN and a special frequency band that I know these phones don't support.

The FCC rules for the PCS band might even explicitly prohibit that kind of function in these phones. (Assuming there were even a CDMA-based technology for it, which I don't think there is today.)

Anything these phones do has to involve the network, which basically means no DirecTalk.

It's like having a Moto talkabout built into a cellphone.

It's an off-network digital walkie with about a six mile range.

Even if they do manage to create a direct talk mode for CDMA -- which would be a MAJOR technological advance, just like the fast PTT QCHAT that runs over the internet on the Rev A network is a major advance-- direct talk users on CDMA frequencies would still not be able to scan for channels in use by emergency personnel during a disaster when the national network is down, which is one of the main attractions of Nextel Direct Talk, because emergency responders using Direct Talk would still be operating on the iDEN frequency.
